Yet the American race faces stiff competition. As well as classic European meetings such as Epsom, Royal Ascot, the Prix de l’Arc and the French Oaks, every year the racing calendar gets more and more cluttered with the ambitious arrival of events in Dubai and Singapore.

The best owners therefore have to choose which events to enter and which to pass on, something organisers of the Breeders’ Cup have recognised by dipping into their wallets.

They propose to cut the entry fee from three per cent to two per cent of the prize fund and reimburse $40,000 of transportation and travel costs for each participant from outside North America.

The decision is clearly aimed at internationalising the 14 Breeders’ Cup events, which have an overall prize fund of $25 million.
