The six-year-old hurdler - who had an eight-pound weight advantage over Wonderful Charm and is making the transition to chases - was the victim of a stop-start gallop last month in a race described by trainer Nicky Henderson as ‘a farce’.

But this time jockey Barry Geraghty led from the front to hold off a late charge from the previously unbeaten Wonderful Charm to hold on for victory.

"We were very hopeful, he did it really well and jumped nicely,” Geraghty said. He did as much as he had to do and I'd say there's plenty of room for improvement.

“I was really taken with the way he jumped and travelled and there's plenty to look forward to."

Daryl Jacob, who rode Wonderful Charm to second, said: "It's asking a lot to give weight to a horse like Oscar Whisky but he has lost nothing in defeat."

Nicholls added: "It was a great run and he's improving rapidly. I'll put him away until March now. There's no point running him on winter ground as he needs it good and I'll give him a break until the spring festivals."

Both horses have now been given odds of 8/1 for the Jewson at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
