HOT FOOTBALL GOSSIP: Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Aubameyang, Berahino

Louis van Gaal’s use of the word “Ronaldo” in the public domain has sent the Sunday papers into a understandable frenzy, like believers in aliens who have just suddenly witnessed a bunch of actual aliens strolling down the street without a care in the world. And now they’re so unbelievably excited that they want to say a million things but they don’t know where to start.

“Get Cristiano Ronaldo!” screams the Mail on Sunday - not even managing to form a proper headline, as it revels in being able to use actual quotes near the top of one of its transfer stories. The paper reveals that the Red Devils are prepared to pay the Portuguese superstar £250,000 a week in a £60m deal, while the Sun on Sunday have got even more hysterical and declared that Ronaldo would cost £80m and earn wages of £500,000 a week. So just a 100 per cent difference in the figures, but they’re just numbers, who cares - the point is Van Gaal used the actual term “Ronaldo”. What the United manager specifically said was that Ronaldo is one of several players United are looking at but they are “mostly ungettable”. Ungettable, unschmettabble. He SAID Ronaldo.

While any deal for the Real Madrid forward would happen next summer, the Sun says that in the short-term United are interested in a £25m deal for West Brom’s Saido Berahino, as well as a surprise move for free agent left-back Ashley Cole, which is almost as sensational as the Ronaldo news.

The mega rumours keep on coming in the Sunday People, which alleges that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has earmarked Arsenal as his next destination. No actual quotes in this one, but we do have it on the unimpeachable authority that the “Sunday People understands”. And the specific things it “understands” are that Ibrahimovic has made indirect contact with Premier League clubs, that he wants to work with Arsene Wenger and that the Frenchman is interested in a deal.

Chelsea are also being linked with a multi-million pound striker swoop, as the Sun on Sunday claims that Jose Mourinho is ready to bid £20m for Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was apparently rated at double that amount last week. The tabloid reports that “Stamford Bridge spies are raving about the Gabon hitman”. Fair enough.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are planning a move for Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato, Newcastle are the latest club tipped to bid for £35m-rated Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi and West Ham are keen on Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda. The Hammers rumour is our favourite because it comes direct from the Brentwood Gazette - and they are NEVER wrong.
