Louis Van Gaal’s hours as manager of Manchester United are numbered. Lose to Chelsea this afternoon and he will see the New Year in with a P45 and a big payout – according to the Guardian.

After four defeats in a row and no win in seven the 64-year-old comes up against fellow Dutchman Guus Hiddink this evening and with fans unhappy, ex-players livid and the people of London wondering which team they will switch their allegiance to, LVG might decide to fall on his sword if United lose to at home to relegation fighters for the second match in a row.

Van Gaal has blamed the media for his current predicament but if goals pay the rent, he and his multi-million pounds superstars would have either been evicted or squatting under taped-together 5p carrier bags.

The latest ex-Old Trafford name to put the boot in is former keeper Mark Bosnich who told Talksport LVG looks like “a defeated man” and is championing Jose Mourinho to ride his bus into the club, park it six yards from goal and grind out a series of 1-0 wins that he was unable to achieve with Chelsea this season.

I would imagine Juan Mata has already been onto Ed Woodward about how he feels about a possible emotional reunion with the man who offloaded him from Stamford Bridge two years ago.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer told The Sun that Van Gaal should have gone after the defeat at Stoke at the weekend because the toothless and gutless display there showed how much he has lost the dressing room.

But it’s not all bad news… The United board enjoyed a mince pie and wine with the manager and gave him their full support according to the Times – but LVG is still ready to go before he is pushed if he feels he is not the right man to turn the club round.
