HOT FOOTBALL MANAGER GOSSIP: Mourinho ‘to replace LVG’ at Man Utd

Could Jose Mourinho end up winning this season’s Premier League after all, by taking over from his old mate Louis van Gaal at Manchester United? Probably not, because United are rubbish. But Jose would have a better chance of claiming a second successive title at Old Trafford than he did at Stamford Bridge. And today’s papers seem to think it’s highly likely he will be handed that opportunity.

The Mirror reports that Van Gaal has just one game to save his job - that being a trip to Stoke on Boxing Day that sounds about as appetising as a plate of cold sprouts. The Sun is even more pessimistic about the Dutchman’s future, claiming he could be fired ahead of the Stoke match. It adds that Mourinho had already been in contact with the United board - via an “intermediary” - before this weekend’s home defeat to Norwich.

The Mail concurs that Mourinho “would jump at the chance” to take over at Old Trafford, adding that he “told friends last week there are some jobs that are impossible to turn down”. Although this could just mean he’s planning to become prime minister of Portugal, or CEO of Disneyland. The Mail also has some telling photos of Mourinho “walking near his house”, and if you study them closely he looks very much like a man who might take the Man Utd job.

But for the sake of everyone in football, if United are going to appoint Mourinho could they make sure they do it before the 28 December - when United play Chelsea.

Jose’s movements could spark a veritable managerial merry go round, with Fox Sports (Fox Sports?!) reporting that Chelsea are lining up Manuel Pellegrini as their next boss. The Guardian predicts that the Chilean will vacate his role at Manchester City in the summer to allow Pep Guardiola to take over, although just to confuse things it adds that Man Utd and Chelsea and also interested in the Spaniard. And Paris Saint-Germain, obviously. Always Paris Saint-Germain.

In non-manager gossip, United are tipped by the Daily Express to make a £29m January bid for Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, Sunderland will try to offload Jeremain Lens in January after he refused to take part in one of Sam Allardyce’s post-defeat warm-downs (the Mirror), and Radamel Falcao is seeking “showdown talks” with Guus Hiddink about his Chelsea future. Probably a good chance they’ll turn into “shown the door” talks.
