HOT FOOTBALL MANAGER GOSSIP: Mourinho on the brink of Chelsea exit

Although this is a column about hot transfer gossip, it’s impossible to ignore the hotter managerial gossip elephant in the room. It’s a big, angry Portuguese elephant with tears of confusion in its eyes and its name, of course, is Jose Mourinho Elephant.

The Chelsea manager, whose job appeared to be the safest in the Premier League when he lifted the title less than five months ago, really does appear to be in a spot of trouble if today’s papers are to be believed.

“Finished” is the assessment blaring out from the back page of the Mirror, which claims Blues players believe it is a case of “when not if” the former Special One is sacked. The tabloid says Mourinho has been in a “dark mood” since the first game of the season, a 2-2 draw with Swansea, and that there is “increasing bemusement” in the dressing room about his behaviour.

Roman Abramovich is keen to get rid of Mourinho but is weighing up whether it’s worth the £30m compensation fee it will cost him, according to some “sources that told ESPN”.

And Jose is so pessimistic about his future that he has already started making contingency plans, according to the Independent, which reports that the manager’s representatives have been advertising their client’s services to Paris Saint-Germain and Internazionale. Jose would prefer a move to Paris, the paper adds.

Although he might have to make do with Monaco, says the Spanish media outlet Sport, which alleges that the Ligue 1 side has already approached the under-pressure boss.

The man deemed capable of filling Mourinho’s expensive shoes is Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, who the Sun describes as the “overwhelming favourite” to be the next occupant of the Stamford Bridge hotseat.

However, the “one straw for Mourinho to clutch at during these turbulent times” is that the former Barcelona coach is likely to prove “elusive”, believes the Times.

Finally, Goal.com reckons Mourinho’s job is safe until at least the next international break in November, which would give him a couple of weeks to prove to the world that he is still Special.

In non-Mourinho hot gossip, PSG have been linked with a move for Tottenham’s 19-year-old midfielder Dele Alli, while Spurs will also allow Andros Townsend to leave the club on loan in January so that they can buy Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie.

And in maybe the biggest story of all, although we won’t be able to confirm that for several years, Real Madrid have signed a 15-year-old Argentinian lad called Lucas Patanelli who has been dubbed “the next Lionel Messi”.
