Hot Football Transfer Gossip: £95m Higuain, £80m Morata, Walcott, Kante, Zlatan

Imagine how cool it would be to be friends with Jose Mourinho. Getting funny texts in his inimitable deadpan style, being invited to his notorious birthday parties where Paulo Ferreira always gets hammered and makes a prat of himself and - best of all - getting all the insider football gossip. The only downside would be all the English tabloids constantly contacting you and asking you what he said, and it turns out that some of Jose’s mates have caved in to the pressure today.

According to the Sunday People, Mourinho has “told pals” that “he WILL” (big letters, he must have shouted that bit) become Manchester United manager in the summer - and the first thing he will do is sign Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain. Jose has “explained to close friends”, presumably at some kind of intimate gathering at his house, that he has lined up a £70m move for the 28-year-old Argentinian, although the People reckons the Serie A side want £95m.

And if that sounds like a silly amount of money for a player who isn’t even that good, wait until you see what Manchester City are reportedly willing to pay for Alvaro Morata. Ready?

It’s £80m, says the Daily Star Sunday - a rather hefty amount for a player who has scored six league goals all season. It’s also about £60m more than Real Madrid are able to re-sign the Spaniard from Juventus for, under the terms of a buyback clause. So not a bad deal for them (if only the Star wasn’t completely making it up).

There could also be a change of scenery this summer for another forward who has a pretty measly goals return this season, and that’s Theo Walcott.

The Arsenal man, who has bagged five times in the Premier League this campaign - the same as he did in the last two campaigns, appears to have finally accepted that this whole football thing isn’t really working out for him at the Emirates. The Sun on Sunday says Theo is “fed up” with being “frozen out” by Arsene Wenger and is set to spark a “summer signing scrap”. Although it looks like a one-team scrap at the moment, with the only interested party mentioned by the Sun being Liverpool.

The Gunners have meanwhile “stepped up the chase” for Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to the Mail on Sunday, which also takes us down memory lane with a claim that Wenger could “make a fresh inquiry” for Karim Benzema. Not sure we could take another summer of that one.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has revealed in the Standard that the Hammers were close to signing Leicester’s N'Golo Kante in the summer but instead got some other players “in the same position”. Bet he’s glad he went for Alex Song now.

Elsewhere, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is “in talks” with Man Utd over a £600,000-a-week deal (Star), Watford, Crystal Palace and West Brom are battling to sign Liverpool striker Jerome Sinclair for £2m (Mirror) and Alexandre Pato wants to stay at Chelsea beyond this season’s loan deal instead of returning to Corinthians (Express). That’s about as revelatory as a 10-year-old wanting to stay at Disneyland for an extra day instead of going back to school.
