Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Arsenal ‘make £30m Sturridge bid’

Karim Benzema. Gonzalo Higuain. Luis Suarez. Edinson Cavani. Yaya Sanogo. Just some of the many men Arsene Wenger has erroneously identified as Arsenal’s next world-class centre forward. Instead, he’s had to endure Olivier Giroud’s lean streaks and Theo Walcott pretending to be a striker. But now there is a new name on Wenger’s list for Gunners fans to get unnecessarily excited about. It’s Daniel Sturridge.

The Sunday Mirror claims that Arsenal will make a £30m summer bid for the Liverpool striker, who has surprised many in recent weeks by running around and kicking a ball without collapsing in agony. Even then, the Mirror thinks Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is not “wildly enthusiastic” about the player, while Sturridge “has never suggested he wants to stay at Anfield for the rest of his career”. Probably because no one has asked him.

By contrast Claudio Ranieri is not interested in adding any A-list superstars to his title-winning Leicester squad; he’d just settle for Troy Deeney and Yannick Bolasie. The Sun on Sunday is tipping the Foxes manager to make a double swoop for the mid-range pair, who would cost about £20m each, although both would need some persuading to move to the King Power. Bolasie apparently wants to move to one of the more “traditional” big teams, while Deeney is “settled in the area”. And who wouldn’t want to live in Watford?

Another striker who could be on the move is Southampton’s Graziano Pelle, who the Sun on Sunday says will be targeted by incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte - the pair already working together in the Italy national side. The Blues are likely to offer £8m for Pelle, or £9m plus Loic Remy.

The Blues are also set to battle Barcelona for Newcastle reject Hatem Ben Arfa, according to the Daily Star Sunday, which also says Oscar is edging closer to a move to Juventus.

West Ham’s tireless search for a striker who gets injured less frequently than Andy Carroll has led them to Mauro Icardi, says the Sunday Mirror. The Hammers are ready to meet the Inter man’s £28m release clause, and are hoping the input of their Argentine midfielder Manuel Lanzini will persuade him to choose West Ham over fellow suitors Arsenal. But then Wenger could just get Nelson Vivas to have a word with him too.

Elsewhere, Stoke are plotting a bid for Norwich winger Nathan Redmond (Sunday Mirror), Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has demanded to leave the club (Sunday Express) and Aston Villa are on the verge of being bought for £100m by a Chinese investment group (Sunday People), which makes the club roughly equal in value to Jackson Martinez.
