Hot football transfer gossip: Barcelona ‘target Arsenal’s Walcott’

It’s been a strange season so far for Theo Walcott. He started it fit, which was a novelty in itself, but found himself on the bench due to Arsenal’s embarrassment of riches in the attacking midfielder/winger department. Then he scored twice in 10 minutes for England, but it was only against San Marino so no one cared. But then he suddenly found himself realising his long-held ambition of leading the line for the Gunners, with Arsene Wenger preferring him to Olivier Giroud in the centre-forward slot that Walcott has forever been telling anyone who will listen is his best position. And people still don’t believe him.

But even by the standards of the winger striker’s eventful 2014/15 campaign, the latest twist in the tale is a bit spectacular: Barcelona want him.

At least, that’s according to the Mirror, which says the Catalan giants are considering the Gunners striker winger as a replacement for their Brazilian midfielder Rafinha, who suffered a serious injury playing in the Champions League this week. Walcott would probably have preferred it if Barcelona wanted him to replace one of their strikers, like Luis Suarez, but he’s still got to be pretty happy with the way things are panning out.

In less confidence-boosting transfer news for Theo, Arsenal are also being linked with a striker: Sion’s 22-year-old, £10m-rated Senegalese front man Moussa Konate. Walcott shouldn’t feel too threatened, though, because Konate is also apparently wanted by Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham. Something tells us his agent fancies getting him a move to London. Maybe he just wants somewhere to crash when he visits. Smart idea too - hotel prices in the capital are extortionate.

Chelsea have also been tipped by the Star to make a £20m January bid for Southampton’s Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan seemed keen on a move to Tottenham in August and is currently ignoring all of Ronald Koeman’s suggestions that he might like to renew his contract at St Mary’s.

The Express seems rather pleased with itself about uncovering a “secret agreement” between Chelsea and Juventus. Something involving Paul Pogba, perhaps? Or Diego Costa? Or even Jose Mourinho himself? No, the big reveal is that Juve can sign Juan Cuadrado for £16m at the end of the season. Given that Cuadrado is already on loan in Turin, and that no one expected him to come back to Stamford Bridge anyway, this rates as one of the dullest secret deals ever. Well done.

In other news, there’s a 20-year-old, left-footed Wolves central defender named Kortney Hause who the Star claims is a target for West Ham, Southampton, Tottenham and Everton. Which only leaves us wondering what Newcastle, Villa, Stoke and Crystal Palace and have got against him.
