Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Ibrahimovic, Kante, Xhaka, Vermaelen, Oscar, Hummels

It’s time to accept that in the coming weeks, until his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires, Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be incessantly linked with a move to Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. And occasionally, he’ll be linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, West Ham or somewhere silly like Newcastle. Today is merely one of the days he is being linked with Arsenal.

It’s convincing though. The Star reports that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has started taking an “active interest” in the Swede, which sounds a bit like he’s been following him around Paris in a car with blacked-out windows, or at least checking Zlatan’s Instagram a lot. The tabloid says the striker has turned down £54m a year to play in China, but that “stumping up mega cash might not put off Wenger”. Because the Frenchman is well known for his extravagance.

As well as addressing his “striker problem” with Ibrahimovic, Wenger is also being tipped to solve his “midfield problem” by signing Leicester’s N'Golo Kante. The Sun claims the French dynamo is at the “top of Wenger’s list”, with the manager revealing an encyclopaedic knowledge of Kante’s career.

Wenger said: “One of my best friends in life knows Kante since he was 10 years old. He played in Suresnes in Paris at the age of nine, 10 years old. After he went to Boulogne as an amateur, they didn’t want to sign him pro. After, he went to Brest, I think, after to Caen.”

But what we really want to know is who is Wenger’s best friend “in life” and in what other realms does he have best friends. The Sun doesn’t tell us that sadly, but it does say that Wenger also wants to sign Borussia Monchegladbach’s Granit Xhaka. Whatevs.

Manchester United have “renewed their pursuit” of Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, reports the Mirror. This news apparently suggests that Louis van Gaal is leaving Old Trafford because he already pulled the plug on United signing Kroos once. Although by that logic, given it was David Moyes who lined up Kroos in the first place, this could also mean the Scotsman is going to make a sensational return to Manchester. Which would be awesome.

Liverpool appear to be keen to sign a defender from Barcelona, whoever he is. Sport claim that Jurgen Klopp wants former Arsenal man Thomas Vermaelen, while Marca says the Reds are among the club interested in Barca’ s Marc Bartra, who is available for £9.3m.

Juventus want to keep on-loan Chelsea midfielder Juan Cuadrado and sign not on-loan Chelsea midfielder Oscar, says the Mail, while Turkish media claim Fenerbahce will try to take Baba Rahman off the Blues’ hands.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough have joined the race to sign £12m-rated Gent striker Laurent Depoitre (Mail), Barcelona are eyeing Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno (Marca) and Man Utd don’t want Mats Hummels anymore because they’ve got Phil Jones Daley Blind (Manchester Evening News).
