But even if Mourinho doesn’t manage to pull this one off, it doesn’t matter that much, because Spanish mavericks Fichajes report that United are also set to outbid Atletico Madrid for Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
And if that doesn’t happen either? It’s OK, because Bayern Munich goal machine Robert Lewandowski also remains on United’s shopping list, reports the Sunday Express.
Annoyingly, they could face competition for the Polish striker from Man City, who apparently want to team him up with Sergio Aguero in Pep Guardiola’s new strike force.
It’s at this point that the transfer gossip involving big-name strikers starts to become more complicated.
Another player interesting United is Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, who Transfer Market Web says is also a target for Arsenal and also Bayern, presumably after they’ve sold Lewandowski. And if Napoli flog Higuain, they will aim to replace him with Everton’s top scorer Romelu Lukaku.
If Arsenal snare the Argentine, Italian media says they could sell Olivier Giroud to Juventus. But if neither of those things happen, the Sun on Sunday reports that Juve could instead turn their attention to Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, who the Express thinks the Reds could try to replace with Lewandowski.
But there’s another twist, because Juventus are also keen on Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, and could battle with Atletico Madrid for the Chilean, reports the Sunday Mirror.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are targeting 22-year-old Deportivo Maldonado striker Jonathan Caller (People) West Ham have agreed an £8.5m deal to sign Turkish winger Gorkhan Tore (Takvim), Liverpool could sell Jordan Henderson (Mail on Sunday) and Man Utd are also keen on £19.5m-rated Valencia winger Andre Gomez (Mirror). So in summary, all that matter is that the Red Devils are going to have the best team in the country next season.
