Hot Football Transfer Gossip: LVG to move ‘upstairs’ at Man Utd, West Ham ‘want Vardy’

Louis van Gaal’s sacking and Jose Mourinho’s appointment as his replacement in the Manchester United hotseat have seemed so inevitable for such a long time that Hot Football Transfer Gossip actually stopped mentioning them weeks ago due to sheer boredom, despite the papers continuing to repeat themselves about it in a variety of ways (something Hot Football Transfer Gossip is not normally averse to itself).

But today, things are different. There has been a twist. It’s being claimed that only one of those inevitable things is true.

The Sun reports that Mourinho will become Man Utd manager this summer - yep, we knew that. Then it reports that Van Gaal will also be staying at Old Trafford.

Confused? You should be, but it can all be explained in three mind-blowing words: managerial dream team.

That’s right, the Sun has alleged that LVG will be offered a job as director of football at Old Trafford while the Special One comes in to work as the actual manager. The division of responsibility is not explained, but it seems entirely possible that Mourinho will run the team and Van Gaal will be kept on purely on the basis of his after-dinner speaking skills.

This “upstairs downstairs” model will reportedly exist for one year until LVG’s contract expires, or until the Dutchman is hounded out by the fans and Ed Woodward replaces him with Joe Kinnear.

Another thing that would be interesting if it happened, but almost certainly won’t, is the Mirror’s prediction that West Ham are going to sign Jamie Vardy. The Hammers, whose summer search for a striker already seems to have a hint of desperation about it, are “exploring” the rumour that Leicester’s top scorer has a buyout clause in his contract. But even if he did, would he sack off the Champions League and go to West Ham? Don’t bother answering - we know.

Arsenal’s capture of Granit Xhaka appears to edge ever closer, with the Sun reporting that the Swiss midfielder has travelled to London to finalise a deal. Their source for this story is one of Xhaka’s mates, who apparently said something along those lines on Facebook.

In Merseyside transfer news, Liverpool are close to signing Mainz goalkeeper Lorius Karius (Guardian) and Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell (Mirror), while neighbours Everton are targeting 21-year-old Club Bruges defender Bjorn Engels (Liverpool Echo) and 21-year-old former Man Utd goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini (Mail).

Oh, and Christian Benteke is going to “hold talks” with Jurgen Klopp about his Anfield future (Express). That could be a short meeting. “Go away Christian.” “OK, thanks boss bye.”
