Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man City ‘target Suarez’, Man Utd ‘want Barkley’

You may not be as familiar with Pere Guardiola as you are with his elder brother Pep - mainly because Pep is better in every single way. He’s taller, better-looking, richer and more talented - it’s a bit like Danny Devito’s and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s characters in Twins. So you can imagine how excited little Pere will be when he sees today’s Sunday Express, which states that Pep wants to work together with his sibling on a special project.

Under the headline, “How Pep Guardiola plans to lure Barcelona star Luis Suarez back to England”, the paper explains the incoming Manchester City manager’s big summer transfer plan. It doesn’t involve getting Suarez drunk - Pep is too classy for that - but rather it centres around Pere, who runs the Media Base sports agency which represents both Suarez and Guardiola.

You can imagine that Pep only gets in touch with Pere when he wants something - and on this occasion it appears that Pep believes his brother can set up a meeting with the Uruguayan striker, which will give Pep his opportunity to convince Suarez that City are a better club than Barcelona. It’s probably best if Pere stands by with some strong alcohol in the event that Plan A doesn’t work.

Manchester United also have ambitious summer plans, with the Daily Star Sunday claiming that the Red Devils have made Everton’s £45m-rated midfielder Ross Barkley their “top transfer target”.

Someone better warn the 22-year-old that Louis van Gaal might still be the club’s manager by then, with the Sunday Mirror reporting that the Dutchman is already “laying down plans” for United’s 2016/17 season and that United chiefs “remain committed” to keeping him on for the final year of his contract.

All of which is sure to annoy Jose Mourinho, whose move to Old Trafford is being stalled by the Glazer family, according to the Metro.

Chelsea will be offered £72.1m to sell Diego Costa to the Chinese Super League, and about half that amount by Atletico Madrid for the same player, reports the Sunday Times. Roman Abramovich better sign up Diego to a Mandarin course and get him interested in the teachings of Mao Zedong sharpish.

The Blues are also being linked with Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster as a potential replacement for Real Madrid target Thibaut Courtois, says the Sun on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Liverpool and Everton will battle for £22m-rated Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette (Mirror), Edinson Cavani has put Chelsea and Man Utd “on alert” by demanding transfer talks with Paris Saint-Germain (Mirror) and Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan has “moved a step closer” to signing for Arsenal by doing some house hunting in London (Sun). Although that could also mean he might be signing for Millwall, or that he’s moving into the lucrative buy-to-let market.
