Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man Utd’s £144m Neymar bid, plus Oscar, Toure, Sturridge

It was all true. You doubted the Sun and the Star when they kept telling you Manchester United had bid millions and millions of pounds for Neymar, but it turns out last year’s sensational Hot Football Transfer Gossip was not made up. And that’s straight from the horse’s mouth. Or, at least, the horse’s father’s mouth.

Neymar Sr, who previously said an unnamed club had bid £144m for his Barcelona superstar son, has now named the club. And according to the Daily Mail, it’s United, who were last summer prepared to smash the world transfer record to smithereens to get the Brazilian.

These revelations came during the Neymars’ court case in Spain over alleged fraud and corruption. So it’s not like there will be any lying going on. You can trust those guys, just like you can trust the tabloids who have been insisting all along that Man Utd want Neymar.

But the Sun and the Star don’t come up smelling exclusively of roses, because it turns out they may have made up the part about United actually having a chance of being successful in their pursuit of Neymar. This is evidently not the case at all, with Neymar Sr maintaining that Neymar Jr is happy where he is. But you never know, maybe they will consider a move to United if they all get sent to prison.

Or maybe they will consider a move to China - it seems to be a fashionable destination right now if you’re Brazilian. With Ramires already there and Alex Teixeira on his way, the Sun reports that Oscar has also been given the opportunity to play in the Far East, with Chelsea being offered £57m to let him go. The Blues rejected the bid from Jiangsu Suning, but apparently the Chinese Super League big spenders will try again to get Oscar in the summer, along with Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.

Another man who could switch clubs at the end of the season is Daniel Sturridge, who the Mirror says is “fed up” with criticism of his Anfield injury record, so he’s decided to go and be injured somewhere else. Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and West Ham are mentioned as potential suitors, probably because they were the first four teams the Mirror could think of.

Elsewhere, Stoke could lose Marko Arnautovic in the summer because he has a £12.5m buyout clause in his contract (Telegraph), New York City want to sign fading goalie Iker Casillas from Porto (ESPN) and Harry Redknapp thinks Arsenal should snap up John Terry if he leaves Chelsea this summer (Standard). He’s had worse ideas, to be fair. Signing Wilson Palacios, for example.
