Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man City ‘to sign Messi, Neymar, Pogba, Stones’

You’d think there would be a lack of Hot Football Transfer Gossip the morning after transfer deadline day, with Premier League clubs not permitted to swoop for reinforcements for several months, but the opposite is true. Because deadline day was overshadowed by Guardiola day, and Pep is a man who can make more big transfers happen in one day that the transfer window managed in a month. Manchester City, it’s fair to say, are going to have quite a good team next season according to the tabloids.

Let’s start with Lionel Messi. The Sun reports that City are “putting together a stunning £120m deal” to tempt Barcelona to sell the five-time world player of the year. It can’t take City much longer than a few minutes to “put together” £120m - Sheikh Mansour could probably find that in spare change lying down the back of the various reclining sofas in his yachts. It’s the tempting Barcelona part that sounds tricky - maybe each note will be encrusted with diamonds and really nice ham. The Sun even gives various reasons why Messi would leave Barcelona - jealous of Neymar, upset about tax evasion charges - until it looks like this could actually happen, when of course it won’t.

Speaking of Neymar, Guardiola is going to buy him too, according to the Express. Citing Spanish cowboys Fichajes, the paper says that City are willing to pay the Brazilian’s £105m buyout clause, which as buyout clauses go actually sounds quite reasonable. Neymar recently stated his admiration for Guardiola, although so did Rio Ferdinand yesterday so presumably City will buy him too.

The Abu Dhabi group will also purchase Paul Pogba, according to the Daily Mail, which tips Pep to “launch an £80m bid” for the Frenchman, as well as a £50m bid for John Stones.

All of which is tremendously exciting for everyone at the Etihad Stadium, with the exception of Eliaquim Mangala and Wilfried Bony, who the Telegraph suggests will be among the victims of the Guardiola revolution.

There are also a few deadline day deals that didn’t happen to tell you about.

Leicester missed out on Chelsea’s Loic Remy because the Blues decided they didn’t want to release the French striker on loan (Leicester Mercury), while Radamel Falcao is currently believed to wandering around Madrid looking for the Calderon Stadium trying to tie up a deal with his former club - even though the window closed 10 hours ago (Standard).

Manchester United’s late loan bid for Mathieu Debuchy was blocked by Arsene Wenger (Mirror), while Aston Villa also missed out on Debuchy as well as goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic (Birmingham Mail) and Lazio’s Ravel Morrison (Talksport).

Most disappointingly of all, Swansea passed up the chance of signing Robinho after he was released by Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande (South Wales Evening Post). Remember when the Brazilian superstar was the biggest thing at Man City? It all seemed so harmless then.
