Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool ‘battle for Pjanic’

Wojciech Szczesny, Toby Alderweireld, Stig Inge Bjornebye, Seamus Coleman. Exotic men whose names we would have pronounced completely wrong if they had never come to the Premier League.

And the next name English people are set to learn how to say properly is Miralem Pjanic.

It seems increasingly likely that the Bosnian midfielder is on his way to these shores from Roma, but it’s still very unclear where he will land.

Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with Pjanic (if you think you already know how to pronounce it, you’re probably wrong) for months, but at 0540 today the Express published a story saying new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has a “desire” for the player and is planning to “hijack” the move.

The reason we mention the time is that at 0738 today, the Express published ANOTHER story saying Man Utd’s hijack was going to be hijacked by Barcelona, which would be awful because then a generation of English people would carry on saying Pjanic’s name wrong.

The other thing that changed in the one hour and 58 minutes between the two Express stories being published is that Pjanic’s price dropped from £30m to £21m. So at this rate, the player should be set for a £250,000 move to AFC Wimbledon by this evening.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is set to accept a £14m bid from Barcelona for Daley Blind, according to the Star. Which would seem to make little sense from United’s perspective, unless it’s because the Dutch defender/midfielder hasn’t stopped crying since his mentor Louis van Gaal left.

Tottenham continue to be linked with strikers - the latest of which is tattooed Watford legend Troy Deeney. The Sun says the Hornets skipper is wanted by Mauricio Pochettino but is also keen to point out he isn’t the club’s “MAIN striker target”, which given the amount of names Spurs have been linked with in recent weeks means he is probably about 73rd on the list.

Somewhere higher up than that is Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, who the Mirror says Spurs believe they are in “pole position” to sign for £30m - ahead of West Ham and Paris Saint-Germain - after holding talks with the player’s representatives.

Perhaps it was the self-esteem boost garnered from those negotiations that has given Spurs the swagger to “stun” Chelsea and Arsenal by entering the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Star). Now there’s a name to get the pronunciation geeks frothing with excitement.

Elsewhere, Arsenal, Leicester and Stoke are competing to sign Inter’s £20m-rated Colombian defender Jeison Murillo (Express), Southampton are preparing a £12m offer for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Ruben Semedo (Star) and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina (Star). We’re not sure whether he knows the Spaniard has already played at Anfield before.
