Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man Utd ‘close in on Pogba’, Arsenal ‘reject Sanchez bid’

The idea that Paul Pogba might sign for Manchester United is not one that Hot Football Transfer Gossip has ever really taken seriously, despite it being reported roughly once a week in the excellent newspapers that Hot Football Transfer Gossip surveys every single day of its godforsaken life.

But there is an unsettling ring of confidence to the latest Pogba story in the Star that makes HFTG wonder whether it might actually be true, even though it’s in the Star.

The tabloid’s Chief Sports Writer, a man (or woman, probably a man) called Jeremy Cross, claims that United are “closing in” on the Juventus midfielder and are in “advanced talks” over an £80m deal that will be completed “once Euro 2016 is over”. The Pog is apparently up for it, having been swayed by Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Old Trafford.

And even though this is in the Star and therefore almost certainly made up, there is interestingly further evidence to back it up in the Daily Mail, which says that Juventus are trying to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.

Although the Gunners have unsurprisingly “rebuffed” the approach, Sanchez is reported to be “growing unsettled” at the Emirates. But this is only the Mail so, again, it’s probably not true. But it would tie in nicely with Juve selling Pogba to Man Utd.

A story that sounds much less contentious is the Mirror’s claim that Christian Benteke is “considering quitting Liverpool”, even if it means signing for Crystal Palace.

The Belgian has moved even further down the Reds’ pecking order since Sadio Mane’s arrival from Southampton, and Palace are reportedly able to pay him “most of” the £140,000 a week he earns at Anfield. About £71,000, then?

Another striker on the move could be Diego Costa, who the Star says has “demanded” a £40m transfer back to his old club Atletico Madrid. This news has apparently “rocked” Chelsea, despite them closing in on the £33m signing of Michy Batshauyi.

AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen is unhappy that his club have rejected Tottenham’s £16.5m bid for him, reports the Guardian. The 22-year-old believes Spurs’ bid was a suitably “high amount”, which is hard to dispute given that Janssen cost AZ just £300,000 last summer.

Elsewhere, Leicester are to set to make a “final” £15m offer for Burnley defender Michael Keane (Mirror), West Ham will let their second-choice goalkeeper leave for £3m after his impressive showing for Republic of Ireland at the Euros (Sun) and Watford have turned down a £38m offer from Shanghai SIPG for Odion Ighalo (Guardian). Really?!
