Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man Utd ‘target Lewandowski, Griezmann and most of Everton’

Two down, two hundred to go. That’s the current status of Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy as they work their way down a list of increasingly less desirable players after missing out on a couple of their top targets.

Bayern Munich’s capture of Renato Sanches and Mats Hummels represent Ed Woodward’s first two failures of the close season, while the Express claims that United will also soon miss out on a third long-term target - Robert Lewandowski - to Real Madrid.

But it’s fine - there are plenty more where he came from, the ever-upbeat Woodward will be telling himself.

The Express says the transfer guru is determined to acquire a “new spine” (centre-back, centre-midfielder, centre-forward) for his beloved manager Louis van Gaal, and he has a list of candidates as long as David de Gea’s outstretched arm.

They apparently include (deep breath) Romelu Lukaku, Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang, Antoine Griezmann, Gabriel Jesus, Sadio Mane, Toni Kroos, Ross Barkley and John Stones, and those are just the ones you’ve heard of. By the time we get down to 200 on the list the quality will have dropped to the point of re-signing Anderson.

But don’t worry, we’re not there yet, and the Star claims that the two “world stars” Woodward is targeting next are Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Mario and Real’s Raphael Varane. He and some other Old Trafford “bigwigs” have apparently been in discussions with representatives of both players, who would cost a combined £75m (30 for Varane, 45 for Mario).

World Cup-winning German midfielder Mario Gotze continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League, with the Star suggesting that Arsenal could land the Bayern Munich man for as little as £16m.

Alternatively, the Sun says incoming Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti is set to offer Gotze to his outgoing employer, Chelsea, for £35m, which sounds like the worst mate’s rate ever. Either way, it would be bad news for Liverpool, who have been pursuing Gotze for months.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director has defied weeks of Hot Football Transfer Gossip by claiming that Arsenal have still not made a bid for his Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, reports the Express.

Meanwhile, French media say the Gunners want N'Golo Kante to bolster their midfield instead, while the Standard reports that Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Mauro Icardi and Vincent Janssen are among several strikers on Arsene Wenger’s very long shortlist.

In manager gossip, Everton look set to appoint a Dutchman to replace Roberto Martinez, with the Guardian saying Ronald Koeman is the number one target for the job and the Mail adding that Frank de Boer is a back-up option.

Elsewhere, Marseille have confirmed that West Ham and Tottenham target Michy Batshuayi will leave the club this summer (Mirror), Pescara striker Gianluca Lapadula is set to snub Leicester for Lazio (Gazzetta dello Sport) and John Terry could be set to stay at Chelsea after the club cancelled a “farewell” tribute to him (Sun). Either he’s staying, or they’ve just decided they don’t really like him that much.
