HOT FOOTBALL TRANSFER GOSSIP: Mane, Grujic, Nolito, Suarez

It seemed strangely unaccommodating of Southampton when they point-blank refused to sell Sadio Mane to Manchester United for £20m in the summer. It was like the owner of an off licence suddenly, inexplicably closing up early at 3pm just as his most loyal regular customers were filling their baskets with grog. But now it all makes perfect sense. If you’re Manchester United, you don’t get a player from Southampton for a measly £20m.

Today’s Telegraph reports that the Saints might be willing to sell Mane, just as they have been willing to sell everyone eventually, but for double what United offered in the summer. In other words, about £40m. And for the club that sold Dejan Lovren for £20m, Adam Lallana for £25m and Luke Shaw for £30m to “bigger teams”, that seems about par for the course.

United also face a battle to sign the Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic, according to the Guardian, which indicates that Chelsea are favourites to land the 19-year-old Red Star Belgrade player. Grujic has been likened to Nemanja Matic in style, which you’d think might have put off Jose Mourinho given his obvious disappointment with Matic’s displays this season. The Guardian adds that PSG will also try to sign Grujic once they have sold Adrien Rabiot, who was allegedly offered to various English clubs in the summer by his mum (also his agent) but none of them were interested. Maybe that’s because he was getting his mum to phone up for him? Just a thought.

Hot Football Transfer Gossip is very annoyed with Celta Vigo striker Nolito, who has suddenly declared that he will not be leaving the Spanish side in January, reports the Mirror. This comes after Hot Football Transfer Gossip spent hours lovingly crafting gossip round-ups about him moving to Arsenal or Barcelona in January, which are now rendered completely pointless. “God will decide my future. I’m not leaving in January,” is what Nolito apparently said. So maybe it’s God we should be annoyed with, although it’s unclear whether Nolito means God has decided that he won’t leave in January, or that Nolito has decided he won’t leave in January unless God advises him differently. Seems easier just to blame Nolito for everything, so let’s stick with for now. Flipping Nolito.

And last but definitely not least, Liverpool have been linked with Suarez. But the rumour appearing in the Star is sadly about Fiorentina midfielder Mario Suarez, rather than his Barcelona namesake. Oh well.
