Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Memphis, Marquinhos, De Gea, Gundogan, Pastore

Keep David de Gea, flog Memphis Depay. That’s an alluring little potential summer scenario to warm the cockles of Manchester United fans on a Saturday morning, and today’s papers explain a way that it could happen.

It starts, obviously, with Marquinhos.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian centre-back may seem like an innocent bystander in this Red Devils fantasy but in fact he could be crucial, reports the Telegraph.

United are keen on bringing the 21-year-old defender to Old Trafford and, although the French side are not particularly keen to sell him, they could be interested in some kind of swap deal.

The one thing PSG don’t need is money - the £40m they would raise by selling Marquinhos would just be thrown onto a big pile that a Qatari prince sleeps on - but they are always looking for players. Marquinhos is not thrilled about playing second fiddle to David Luiz in defence so he is open to a move, but which Man Utd players could PSG possibly be interested in?

There’s only one the Telegraph can think of, and that’s Memphis.

Before United fans get too excited, it’s not the most convincing claim. All the Telegraph is basing it on is that PSG “attempted to sign” the Dutchman before he moved to United, so it’s possible they may simply consider that a lucky escape. But the broadsheet offers hope with the example of Angel Di Maria, who also looked useless under Louis van Gaal but is now once again a world-beater in Ligue 1.

The other team interested in Marquinhos is reportedly Chelsea, and once again this leaves PSG scouring an inferior squad for a player they might like to swap him for. The Telegraph says they would be keen to take Eden Hazard (but Chelsea don’t want to sell him) and Diego Costa (but he wants to move to Atletico Madrid instead) and were “in the past” interested in Oscar. None of which sound very promising, leaving Ed Woodward to dress Memphis in a pretty pink bow and send the resulting photos to Paris with his fingers crossed.

As for the second part of this United fantasy, the Daily Star says goalkeeper De Gea will not leave Old Trafford this summer “even if United fail to qualify for the Champions League”. Again, there is a small caveat, which is that this is actually what LVG has said rather than the Star - and in this instance he is probably an even less reliable source than the tabloid. The manager does sound confident though - even claiming that Real didn’t even come close to signing DDG last summer. Has he had a drink?

Confidence can work wonders as a technique of persuasion though, and the Sun displays it in bucketloads with its claim that Manchester City have “finally” agreed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan after “weeks of discussions”. Today is the day. Forget all past and future gossip about Gundogan - the Sun has nailed it. The sticking point was apparently the transfer fee, with the Germans wanting £34m and City offering £28m - but they’ve now settled on £30m. Good.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are interested in another PSG player in the shape of Argentinian midfielder Javier Pastore (Express), Man Utd have agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old FC Zurich striker Nishan Burkart (Blick) while Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are vying to sign “21-goal Roma striker” Umar Sadiq (Star). A slightly misleading headline because only two of those goals have been scored for Roma’s first team and the others at youth level.
