Jose Mourinho is one of those guys who, whenever they phone you up, it’s because they want something. Sure, he might start off making pleasantries – discussing the weather, asking about your cat, expressing surprise at the latest plot twists in Neighbours – but you know it’s just an elaborate build-up to what he really wants to ask. So you wait, and you humour him with small talk, and then he asks it. And it’s pretty much always the same question, “Will you come and play for my club?”

And today, he’s hitting up Alexis Sanchez.

The Star reports that Arsenal’s unsettled forward is the latest recipient of the Mourinho phone call, thereby joining a star-studded list of players who the Portuguese has attempted to seduce with his mobile over the years.

Last week the Manchester United manager was calling up Neymar; before that he famously smooth-talked Pedro into joining Chelsea instead of United; now it’s Alexis’ turn.

The Star claims that, after all the stuff about EastEnders and the weather, Mourinho “tried to convince” Alexis is to quit the Emirates for Old Trafford.

The problem is, Mourinho has competition. The Telegraph says Paris Saint-Germain have “stepped up” their efforts to sign the Chilean, and they’ve only done that because of Chelsea’s increasingly “strong interest” in luring him to west London. Whether that is a match for Jose’s dulcet tones, only time will tell.

Just in case his magic doesn’t work on Alexis, the Express says Mourinho is also pondering a move for Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski. But apparently that will only happen if Zlatan Ibrahimovic quits United. And if Mourinho doesn’t sign Sanchez instead. Or Antoine Griezmann.

Chelsea have other attacking targets too. The Metro says their £70m deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton is “almost done”, while Spanish cowboys Don Balon say the Blues have joined the race for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema – a transfer tussle that also includes Juventus and, obviously, Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Schalke’s 23-year-old Serbian left-back Sead Kolisinac will snub offers from Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton to move to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer, predicts the Mirror.

But Chelsea are set to lose out to United in their alleged pursuit of James Rodriguez, who the Star says has told Real Madrid he wants to move to Old Trafford and is not interested in going anywhere else (unless they pay him more money).

Elsewhere, Tottenham have added their name to the list of clubs queuing up to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, who is also allegedly wanted by Liverpool and Bayern Munich (Mirror), Daley Blind is set for a summer move back to Ajax because Man Utd have shown no inclination to offer him a new contract (Sun) and the Red Devils are interested in 16-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps winger Alphonso Davies (Mail), which is an excellent name for a man of any age.
