Gossip: Mourinho 'makes Ronaldo number one target', Manchester City 'to sign Dani Alves', Tottenham 'want Smalling'

Transfer targets: Dani Alves, Chris Smalling, Cristiano Ronaldo

Sit back, relax and strap yourself in for this summer’s hottest transfer blockbuster, Cristiano Ronaldo Might Go to Manchester United, the sequel to Cristiano Ronaldo Might Go to Manchester United 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. But this time it’s bigger and better, allegedly. And this time it’s personal, because Cristiano is really annoyed about having to dip into his fortune to pay a tax bill.

The Sunday papers can’t resist getting involved, with the Times reporting that Jose Mourinho has given the “green light” to a move for the unsettled superstar and would rather sign CR7 than any of the other forwards United have been linked with, which would just be typical of Alvaro Morata’s luck.

United are said to be “exploring the viability” or bringing the 32-year-old back to Old Trafford. Or, in other words, working out whether they can justify paying £132m for a player who is older than Ashley Young (albeit, admittedly, also better than Ashley Young).

The Sunday Mirror goes with the line that Ronaldo told Sir Alex Ferguson “six weeks ago” that he wanted to quit the Bernabeu due to the “lack of recognition” he had received. That fourth Ballon d’Or title, for instance.

It is suggested by the same paper that Ronaldo will only stay with Real “if they pay his £13m tax bill”, plus any fine he receives for not paying it himself. And the Sun on Sunday adds that the Spanish champions are prepared to do just that. Hmm.

But in the most intriguing twist of all, the Sun on Sunday also reports that Cristiano and his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, have been having DNA tests to see if they will have a “super baby”, whatever that is (maybe they have designed one that can do Cristiano’s tax accounts in the future).

Lover’s tiff

Moving on from CR7, the Observer reports that Manchester City are set to sign another La Liga legend, Dani Alves, from Juventus for £5m. News that may come as some concern to fellow (and more expensive) right-back target Kyle Walker.

It may also be of concern to Daniel Levy, who had reportedly demanded £60m for Walker. The Tottenham chairman appears to have got so upset that he might go and buy Chris Smalling from Man Utd just to make himself feel better (Mail on Sunday).

Chelsea will turn to former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique if they fail to keep Antonio Conte at the club, says the Sunday Telegraph. However, the Mail on Sunday believes the Italian will remain at Stamford Bridge, reporting that his “lover’s tiff” with the Blues “looks to be over”.

Elsewhere, Arsenal hope to beat Everton to the £18m signing of Genk’s 19-year-old Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge (Sunday Mirror), Liverpool are still interested in signing Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins, although the Portuguese club want £44m for him (A Bola) and Sunderland will be forced to pay Inter Milan £9.2m for 29-year-old Argentinian midfield flop Ricky Alvarez after losing a court case (Sunderland Echo). That’s even worse value than the £10m they spent on Jack Rodwell.
