Transfer Gossip: Mourinho 'orders' Man United to sign Griezmann, Chelsea labelled favourites to sign Cavani

Antoine Griezmann was Man United’s top target in the summer.
Antoine Griezmann was Man United’s top target in the summer.

When Manchester United couldn’t sign Antoine Griezmann, they tried to sign Alvaro Morata instead, and when they didn’t sign Alvaro Morata, they signed Romelu Lukaku instead of him. So, in other words, they no longer need Antoine Griezmann? Wrong.

The Express reports that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is still planning to sign Atletico Madrid’s star player and has “ordered” Old Trafford bosses to return for the Frenchman’s signature at the end of the season in an £88m swoop.

There doesn’t appear to be much new information in this story, so it’s unclear why the Express has chosen today to publish it. In fact, it seems quite possible they may have just republished an old story from last year and changed the date. Fair enough – saves time.

The only difference between then and now is that cuddly goalscorer Diego Costa has since joined Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano (that’s Atleti’s new stadium, in case you missed it) and some believe this could hasten his strike partner’s departure.

But perhaps Costa’s arrival will instead hasten the departure of some of Atletico’s other forwards, such as Kevin Gameiro.

This, at least, is what Everton hope. The Mirror claims the Toffees have earmarked the 30-year-old France international as the solution to their striking problems, having failed to sign 30-year-old France international Olivier Giroud from Arsenal.

Ronald Koeman is “plotting” a bid for Gameiro in the New Year after being “sounded out about his potential availability”. Atletico are apparently willing to let the striker leave on loan in January – when Costa becomes available for selection – ahead of a £20m permanent move in the summer.

Chelsea ‘favourites’ to sign Cavani

Enough room?

Gameiro seems a more realistic option for Everton than fellow transfer target Edinson Cavani, who the Sun says is more likely to join Chelsea in January following his tiff with Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar.

Meanwhile, the Blues may face a battle to keep young Belgian midfielder Charly Musonda, whose goalscoring full debut in last week’s Carabao Cup tie against Nottingham Forest has attracted the attention of Man Utd and Arsenal.

The Express says Chelsea will offer Musonda a new contract to ward off their rivals’ interest. All because he scored one goal?? No wonder he cried tears of joy after he found the net.

Elsewhere, Man Utd will face competition from Real Madrid for the Juventus forward Paulo Dybala (Star), United, Arsenal and Liverpool are battling it out to sign MK Dons’ 16-year-old sensation Dylan Asonganyi (Mirror) and PSG are attempting to beat Manchester City to the signature of Alexis Sanchez by offering the Chilean a £9m “advance” on his signing-on fee in January ahead of a proposed summer move (Sun). Is Alexis really so strapped for cash that he’ll be desperate to get his hands on £9m a few months early?
