Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Mourinho, Sanches, Balotelli, Oscar, Bale

One thing Manchester United have learned in the past two years is that you can’t make up for the loss of sir Alex Ferguson simply by appointing an experienced, defensive manager and just giving him unlimited sums of money to throw at players.

But it appears they are choosing to ignore that lesson and doing exactly the same thing again - namely replacing Louis van Gaal with Jose Mourinho and giving him an astronomical transfer war chest.

The figure available is £300m to be precise, according to the Daily Star, which says that United’s transfer guru Ed Woodward wants Mourinho “to create a side capable of challenging for major trophies”. Not sure if he includes the FA Cup in that.

The potential targets mentioned are Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Thomas Muller, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane, who by our rough calculations would actually cost a bit more than £300m. But even if Mourinho can’t attract all those players, he will at least be able to spend more than the £250m LVG splashed out in the past two seasons. That extra £50m will can the difference (along with not spending any of it on Radamel Falcao).

Jose will also have his Super-Mate Jorge Mendes to help out - and the Star reports that the Portuguese agent will smooth the way for the Portuguese manager to sign the Portuguese midfield sensation Renato Sanches from Benfica for £39m. The Star attributes this story to the Sun, which is funny because the Sun actually says nothing of the sort, instead claiming Manchester City could beat United to the teenager’s signature. Weird.

Also weird is the claim in the Mirror that AC Milan want to turn Mario Balotelli’s loan move from Liverpool into a permanent one, despite the fact that the Italian striker has only scored once in Serie A this season. San Siro chiefs are apparently “keen to meet Anfield officials to thrash out a deal”, which sounds like they might just be planning to offer the Reds fifty quid for Mario. Either that or Balotelli has planted this story himself, with him quoted as saying: “I want to stay at Milan. I do not want to return to Liverpool. I was never happy at Liverpool. Plus Milan have the money.” Yep, the have the fifty quid.

Elsewhere, Man Utd midfield target Andre Gomes is set to join Juventus from Valencia instead of moving to Old Trafford (Sun), Chelsea’s Oscar has “sparked a frenzy” by liking an Instagram post saying that Juven want to sign him (Metro) and Gareth Bale has told the Times that he has “never had an argument” with Cristiano Ronaldo, which doesn’t mean Ronaldo hasn’t had lots of arguments with him.
