Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Mourinho ‘to spend £200m and make Zlatan his Man Utd assistant’

It will put a lot of people out of their misery when Manchester United finally announce they have appointed Jose Mourinho as their next manager, especially Louis van Gaal and Juan Mata, but in the meantime we all have to make do with speculation about what the Special One might do when he arrives at Old Trafford. And whatever he does, it seems highly likely it will involve Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Star says the Portuguese supercoach will be given £200m this summer to “turn United into Premier League title winners” - a strategy that worked so well when LVG tried it.

The tabloid says free agent Ibrahimovic will be Jose’s “top target”, while the Guardian adds that United also want to sign (deep breath) Andre Gomes, Joao Mario, John Stones, Alvaro Morata, Mauro Icardi, Ezequiel Garay, Alex Sandro and Paul Pogba.

Juventus have reportedly quoted the Red Devils an eye-watering £115m each for Pogba and Sandro, but most of the other players could be had for around the £40m mark.

The Daily Mail makes the pretty shocking revelation that Mourinho was paid £4m by United earlier in the season just to promise he wouldn’t move to a rival club. That’s how low Man Utd’s self-esteem has sunk. The paper also says Van Gaal learned he was being sacked after his wife read it on the BBC Sport website.

But the most exciting piece of United gossip appears in the Daily Express, which claims that Ibrahimovic is set to move to Old Trafford as Mourinho’s assistant manager, combining the position with a playing role for the first 12 months of the deal. Can you imagine Zlatan dropping Zlatan if he hits a bad run of form?

Either way, it all seems like bad news for Ryan Giggs, who the Mirror reports is set to leave Old Trafford after 29 years at the club once Mourinho is appointed. Well, at least Giggsy can proudly look back at that period knowing he won an incredible number of trophies and had a phenomenal amount of sex.

In non-Man Utd news, the Star says Arsenal have “entered negotiations” to sign Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia, who has described his time in Germany as “the most difficult two years of my career”, adding, “I don’t wish what has happened to me on anyone.” And now he’s going to sign for Arsenal - the poor guy just can’t catch a break.

Elsewhere, Everton have spoken to Manuel Pellegrini about becoming their new manager (Mail), Chelsea target Gonzalo Higuain is poised to sign for Paris Saint-Germain instead (Sun) and Pep Guardiola has given Manchester City the green light to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan for £20.1m even though he has a knee injury (Telegraph). The theory is that even with one leg he’ll be more effective than Wilfried Bony.
