Hot Football Transfer Gossip: New Chelsea boss Conte ‘wants Lukaku, Higuain and Costa'

One day into Antonio Conte’s tenure as Chelsea manager, there are three things we already know about him for certain: he has luxurious hair, he loves to gesticulate and he has no plans to play Loic Remy up front next season.

Today’s back pages are festooned with photos of the Italy coach making impassioned gestures on various touchlines with his face perfectly framed by an immaculate barnet, accompanied by stories of him buying new strikers.

The Star says that Conte has told his new boss Roman Abramovich to re-sign (no, not resign – re-sign) former Blues striker Romelu Lukaku – with the coach insisting he wants a £50m deal done before Euro 2016. Why before Euro 2016? Sounds like wants to get inside the Belgian’s before he has the chance to score against Italy.

Professional Italians Gazzetta dello Sport have it another way, claiming that Conte will make Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain his number one striker – with a frankly ridiculous £75m price tag being suggested. The paper has even mocked up a design of its entire predicted Chelsea line-up for next season, and we like it so much that we will repeat it here in full: Courtois in goal, a back three of Kurt Zouma, Leonardo Bonucci and Antonio Rudiger, Azpilicueta and Kenedy as wing-backs, Fabregas, Pogba and Nainggolan in midfield, and finally Higuain playing up front with Eden Hazard. Unlucky Willian.

The striker who gets most column inches today, however, is already at Chelsea. But for how long? It’s Diego Costa.

The papers seem to be in agreement that Conte, in his determination to never play Loic Remy, would like to keep Costa at Stamford Bridge. The Mirror is one of several papers saying that keeping the Spanish Brazilian is Conte’s “top priority”, but the Guardian is among those predicting that the manager faces a “tough task” in achieving it. Costa apparently has his heart set on a move back Atletico Madrid, with Paris Saint-Germain and the Chinese also sniffing around.

The Mirror also predicts that Conte will “jettison” Thibaut Courtois in favour of Southampton’s Fraser Forster while welcoming back Blues outcast Juan Cuadrado with open arms. Bit weird.

Tearing ourselves away from Chelsea news for a moment, the Mirror says that Manchester United have been asked to pay £60m for Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez. Although actually so have Chelsea.

So let’s try that again. In news that definitely isn’t about Chelsea in any way, shape or form, Liverpool are keen on £10m-rated Real Madrid winger Lucas Vasquez (Corriere dello Sport) Sunderland have taken a fancy to Toulouse forward Martin Braithwaite (Mail), West Ham are all over Levante midfielder Victor Camarasa (Star) and Yaya Toure’s agent says he will “definitely” quit Manchester City this summer (Manchester Evening News). Maybe he’ll sign for Chelsea.
