Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Pogba to Man City, Niguez to Man Utd, Gotze to Liverpool

What would be best way for Manchester City to get their own back on Manchester United for Sunday’s derby defeat? Easy. Buy Paul Pogba.

The former Old Trafford youth player, who famously left United on a free transfer and is now worth about £80m, is believed to be a summer target for both Manchester clubs. But according to the Daily Star, it’s City who are in the driving seat.

Their story on the subject even contains some quotes to back up that claim, which is highly unusual for the Star, but the catch is there’s a good chance the person quoted has no idea what he’s talking about.

Ariedo Braida, a fellow described as the “former AC Milan sporting director”, has predicted that if Pogba leaves Juventus, he will sign for “us, City or PSG”. It’s the “us” part in that sentence that is confusing, leaving one to assume that he must be referring to AC Milan - which sounds unlikely.

But actually he is talking about Barcelona, the club Braida now works for as a sporting director - something the Star neglects to mention. Whichever way you swing it, it’s something for City fans to cling to in these dark moments.

There is some more positive news for United in the Express, which claims that the Red Devils will beat Arsenal to the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. The Gunners apparently bid £23m for the 21-year-old in January, but United are set to top that with a £31m offer in the summer - with Atletico resigning to losing a player who has refused to sign a new contract.

Meanwhile, the Metro reports that Arsenal have been cordially “invited” to enter into transfer talks to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho, which all sounds very civilised. The man who sent out the invitation is Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos, who will presumably be laying on some wine and Twiglets for the talks. Santos is simultaneously playing a bit hard to get, adding that the 24-year-old Brazilian “has a five-year contract with Napoli and wants to play for them in the Champions League next year.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool have entered negotiations to sign 20-year-old Hoffenheim centre-back Niklas Sule (Star), the Reds have been tipped to sign Bayern Munich substitute Mario Gotze (Metro) and Man Utd goalkeeping target Mattia Perin has pledged his future to Genoa (Star).

Finally, in manager gossip, the Daily Mail says Aston Villa are set to sack Remi Garde within 48 hours and Nigel Pearson is the favourite to replace him. Poor old Pearson, back in the same place he was with Leicester a year ago, as if that Foxes’ fairytale had never happened.
