Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Pogba ‘put off by Europa League’, Man Utd ‘want Joe Allen’

Like when you start dating someone and it’s all going great until they find out you still live at home with your mum, Paul Pogba may have found out Manchester United’s terribly embarrassing secret.

(Whisper it…) They’re not in the Champions League.

Things had appeared to be going swimmingly between the Juventus superstar and the Europa League misfits in recent weeks, but there was a niggling suspicion that United were punching above their weight.

Now, says the Times, the relationship could be scuppered by Pogba finding out that United are not the hotshots they pretend to be. We’re not sure exactly when he found this out, but Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri says he believes the Frenchman will be “put off” by United’s participation in the second-tier competition and prefer to remain with the Italians instead.

That would leave United to pursue a central midfielder more befitting their status, and the South Wales Evening Post has identified one for them: Joe Allen. Swansea have a long-standing interest in the Liverpool midfielder, but Jose Mourinho “could scupper it”, having identified Allen as a man who would be perfect for the Europa League.

Liverpool could replace Allen with Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Telegraph reporting that the Reds have jumped “to the head of the queue” to sign the Dutch midfielder. The Magpies signed Wijnaldum for £14.5m last summer, then got relegated, and now they want £27m. Good luck with that.

Another man who appears to have increased in value without doing very much is West Ham forward Enner Valencia, who the Mirror says has a £15m price tag on his head amid interest from Lazio and Swansea. The Hammers have allegedly rejected a £2.5m loan fee from the Serie A club and a £10m bid from the Swans.

Valencia has at least played a few more games than his 17-year-old team-mate Reece Oxford, who is also apparently worth £15m - a figure that Man City and Man Utd are both willing to pay, says the Sun.

Burnley will sign Charlton duo Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Nick Pope this week for a combined £3.6m to end a “summer of frustration”, says the Mirror. Finally, their fans can rejoice at having acquired two players who just got relegated from the Championship.

Elsewhere, Juventus have offered Leonardo Bonucci to Chelsea but they want £50m for him (Manchester Evening News), Everton want to make former Man Utd star Jordi Cruyff their director of football (Sun) and Tottenham have opened talks with Marseille over an £11m deal for 21-year-old winger Georges-Kevin N'Koudou (Mail), which would be good because the Premier League hasn’t had a double-barrelled Christian name that good since the days of Joe-Max Moore.
