Hot Football Transfer Gossip: PSG ‘plot £40m Lallana bid’, Man Utd ‘target Payet’

Hot Football Transfer Gossip loves the Sunday papers. It’s like this one magical day where all the normal papers go away and different ones come in and craft fantastical tales that no one mentions again for the rest of the week. Then the following Sunday, a whole new set of fantastical tales are created.

Every Sunday morning is like peeling open the first crisp page of a new book in the Harry Potter series. And the best thing is that you just never know what’s going to happen next. It could be Messi to Manchester City, Benzema to Arsenal, Darren Bent to Barca… it’s simply whatever catches the imagination of is meticulously investigated by the Sunday hacks.

And today they bring us a dramatic double bill: Dimitri Payet to Manchester United! And Adam Lallana to Paris Saint-Germain!

We have to start with Lallana. A man who was once derided as an Anfield flop, and as recently as this summer would have been talked of disparagingly by England fans because he made it into the Euro 2016 squad.

But things have changed, and the Sun on Sunday provides us with the ultimate confirmation of the Liverpool midfielder’s elevated status: PSG are ready to “break the bank” to sign him.

The “French moneybags”, as the Sun calls them with Rowling-esque flair, are “plotting a £40m bid” for Lallana and are prepared to “triple his wages” with a £200,000-a-week contract offer.

The tale is topped off with a sensational quote from a “PSG insider”, who says, “Adam is seen as a player of real quality in the Premier League.”

Incredible stuff.

Not to be outdone by this hard-hitting journalism, the Sunday Mirror reveals that Jose Mourinho has made West Ham midfielder Payet his “priority” as he “steps up his Old Trafford revolution”. The Hammers would reportedly demand £35m for the 29-year-old, who seems like exactly the kind of hard-working, back-tracking playmaker that Mourinho loves.

No insider quotes in this story unfortunately, but the tabloid does throw in the extra juicy titbits that United also want Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco and that West Ham are set to bid £15m for Sunderland defender Lamine Kone.

The Sunday Express is going big too, claiming that Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is ready to splash out some megabucks on Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez, who they say Man Utd are also trying to buy.

Less exciting news for Blues fans is that Thibaut Courtois could run down his Stamford Bridge contract so that he can sign for Madrid for free in 18 months’ time (Sun on Sunday).

Elsewhere, Man City want to replace Vincent Kompany with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk (Daily Star Sunday), Bayern Munich’s David Alaba would prefer to join Arsenal to Man Utd (Manchester Evening News) and the coach of Brazilian club Santos says he is trying to sign Red Devils outcast Bastian Schweinsteiger (101GreatGoals).

Finally, in hot manager gossip, Jurgen Klopp is tempted to quit Liverpool and replace Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern (Sunday Mirror), while Roy Hodgson could be set for a return to football with Norwich (Daily Star Sunday).

Breathe in all this news and savour it, because you might never hear any of it again.
