Hot Stove Digest: With Mark Trumbo gone, who are the best free agents left?

Welcome to The Stew’s Hot Stove Digest, our daily rundown of MLB news, rumors and gossip for Hot Stove season. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all the day’s action and other fun stuff from around the internet that we think is worth your time.

THE BIGGEST NEWS OF THE DAY: Mark Trumbo is headed back to the Baltimore Orioles, according to Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan. Trumbo was the best free agent left on the market. He’ll get about $37 million over three years. He led the AL in home runs last year, his first in Baltimore. Having a qualifying offer attached to him hurt his value on the open market, however, so he’s headed back to Baltimore for what seems to be much less than he originally hoped for. [Yahoo Sports]

NOT QUITE: Trumbo’s camp was asking for $80 million last month. So he didn’t quite get that. [@ChrisCotillo]

SO WHO’S LEFT? With Trumbo off the market, who’s left in the free-agent market? That list isn’t exactly thrilling. The best hitter and position player is Matt Wieters, the ex-Baltimore Orioles catcher, who ranks No. 14 overall on Passan’s free-agent tracker. The top pitcher is Jason Hammel, ex of the Cubs, who ranks No. 17 overall. Other — *ahem* — notable free agents include: Luis Valbuena, Brandon Moss, Chase Utley, Brett Anderson and Travis Wood. NOT SO FAST: The Los Angeles Angels are moving closer to signing Luis Valbuena to a multi-year deal. Valbuena, 31, hit .260/.357/.459, with 13 home runs, over 342 plate appearances with the Houston Astros last year. While he has experience playing every infield spot except short, it’s unclear where Valbuena will receive the bulk of his playing time with Los Angeles. A platoon role at either first or third base seems most likely. [OC Register]

ICYMI: The Brewers added reliever Neftali Feliz on a one-year deal worth $5.35 million. He figures to be their closer. [The Stew]

ICYMI 2: The Marlins sent a few prospects to the Cincinnati Reds for pitcher Dan Straily, who they picked up off waivers last year. Not a bad come-up for the Reds. [The Stew]

OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL: The Rangers made their one-year pact with starting pitcher Tyson Ross official on Thursday. He doesn’t figure to be ready for opening day. [@Rangers]

JUST ‘CAUSE THEY’RE COOL: Topps created baseball cards for our new Hall of Famers in the style of the 1988 All-Star cards, which is pretty sweet. [Topps]
