Hot Tweet: Jon Jones Willing to Fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 196

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones on Monday said that he would certainly step in to fight Stipe Miocic in the UFC 196 main event on Feb. 6… with one condition. He would do it, if they were fighting for the actual UFC heavyweight championship, but apparently not if it were for an interim version of the belt.

In response to a fan asking UFC president Dana White to have Jones face Miocic for the interim heavyweight championship, Jones tweeted, “If it was for the actual title, I would do it.”

It would certainly be a surefire way to save the UFC 196 card after two significant blows in a 24-hour period took out both original main event fighters.

On Sunday, challenger Cain Velasquez withdrew from his rematch with Fabricio Werdum, the current heavyweight champion, citing a back injury. UFC officials moved swiftly, announcing on Sunday night that Miocic had agreed to take Velasquez's place to challenge for the belt on short notice.

Less than 24 hours later, Werdum told Brazilian reporters that he was also pulling out of the fight due to a cracked toe and injured back.

That was a devastating blow to the fight card, which doesn't have another bout already in the line-up that could honestly be considered a pay-per-view worthy headliner. The closest match-up would be the welterweight co-main event between former 170-pound champion Johnyy Hendricks and rising contender Stephen Thompson.

Heavyweights Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell, who are scheduled to face each other in New Jersey this weekend, each offered to step up and face Miocic, but thus far, no one from the UFC has commented on the matter since Werdum publicly stated that he was not going to fight at UFC 196.
