Cleanse your pores
It might sound obvious, but you’ll be surprised how many take this step for granted. It’s essential to give your skin a really good cleanse every morning and night. It removes all the impurities and dead skin cells that can clog your pores, leading to dull and breakout-prone skin. Clogged pores also stop skincare from being fully absorbed into the skin. So all those skin boosters won’t have even half the effect if your pores aren’t clean. That doesn’t mean you pick up the first scrub you find and rub away at your skin. Opt for a cleanser that is crafted for your skin type. After all those heavy makeup days we suggest going in for a double cleanse to really get rid of all the build up and refresh your skin. Look for products that are also gentle and hydrating. You don’t want to strip your skin of all moisture in your aim to get squeaky-clean skin.

Masks to the rescue
A face mask is a great way to detox your skin and combat dullness. Look for formulas with clay, charcoal or mud as they draw out impurities from the top layer of the skin. All three are especially beneficial for those who have congested pores and oily skin. These masks help absorb excess oil and purify the skin so that you’re left with a smoother, clearer complexion. An important tip when layering on a face mask. Don’t wait till the mask is completely dry and cracking before taking it off. By doing this you’re drying out your skin and stripping it of the essential oils that keep it hydrated and soft. So make it a point to wash off the mask while it’s still soft.

Steam yourself clean
If you’re scheduling an at-home spa, take the time to do a bit of steaming when you start. Steaming will open your pores and loosen makeup residue, stubborn grime, and bacteria. Your facials and masks will be much more effective after this step. Boil some water in a pot and transfer it to a bowl. Place your face over the bowl, and drape a towel over your head so as to ensure no steam escapes. Steam your face for five to ten minutes and then proceed with your home spa.

Sweat it out
A cardio-powered workout will increase blood flow and lymph circulation in the body, which helps flush out waste, aiding in the detox. Sweating it out gets rid of toxins and impurities from the skin, while helping your get over the hangover you’re nursing. That sounds like a win-win.

Hydrate your skin with water
Take a break from the perk-me-up coffees and dehydrating sugary juices, and replace them with much-needed water and detoxifying green tea. Make water your best friend during this skin detox, as it will help you stay hydrated, flush out impurities and keep your digestion on track. Commit to drinking at least two litres of water a day to give your skin a break and help it get clean from the inside out. If you find yourself reaching for coffee, swap it out for some green tea, which has some potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits.
