How to make the perfect margarita

By Alexandra Zaslow

When you’re the most popular tequila-based cocktail, you deserve your own holiday.

National Margarita Day is observed annually on Feb. 22, and this year, we’re celebrating at La Contenta in the heart of New York City’s Lower East Side.

With family recipes dating back to the late 1930s, colorful decorations and mariachi music playing in the background, this family-owned restaurant is dripping with authenticity.

Three brothers opened La Contenta in February 2015 after moving to New York from Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2000.

While Rigo and Rafa Cervantes keep things running smoothly, Alex Valencia is behind the bar shaking up the best margarita in town.

“We realized that there were a lot of Mexican restaurants in New York, but not many that have authentic Mexican cuisine,” Valencia, 36, told Yahoo.

Valencia has been bartending since 2006 and continues to get joy out of serving margaritas.

“My margarita is the perfect balance between three simple ingredients married together,” Valencia said. “Nothing is as beautiful as the magic of a cocktail.”

His key ingredient? A square block of ice.

Recipe:

– 2 oz. tequila

– .75 oz. lime juice

– .75 triple sec

– 1 teaspoon agave nectar

Mix all the ingredients together with ice, shake for seven or eight seconds, garnish with a lime wedge and serve.

¡Salud!
