10 ways your salon services will change post-lockdown

It’s safe to say that the coronavirus pandemic has changed us in ways we could never imagine. From WFH to Zoom parties, it is evident that our world will never be the same again. We’ve begun to value the little things we’ve often taken for granted – like a walk in the park, that dentist’s appointment you kept postponing before you realised you never know when you’ll get that molar extracted. Or indeed your salon routine. While it remains to be seen how things shape up when the lockdown is lifted – Maharashtra CM has hinted it will be extended till the end of May – what we do know is that everything we’ve been doing will change. And these are the ways that your salon services will change too.

1. Walk-ins may not be encouraged

Remember the times when you could simply walk into a salon for a quick blowdry or eyebrow service? That won’t be possible anymore. With salons working at 50 per cent of staff strength, larger chains such as Lakme Salon will only accept pre-booked appointments.

2. You will be screened

Like it or not, the Aarogya Setu app will be part of our lives and salons will use it to screen not just its employees but also its customers. It’s also likely that if you’re in the high-risk group you may well be turned away.

3. Salons will take hygiene even more seriously

Think, daily deep cleaning and regular disinfection of every touchpoint throughout the day with a biosurfactant cleaner.

4. Your hairdresser will likely look like a bomb disposal expert

Kidding, of course. But salon chains like Lakme Salon plans to introduce a new uniform for their staff that includes a face mask, hand gloves, head caps and a visor so they don’t pass on their infections to you or catch any from you either.

5. Use-and-throw kits will become popular

Lakme Salon says it has created single-use kits for services to avoid sharing of products between customers, so you can avail your favourite service without risk.

6. Tools will be sterilised more often

Combs, scissors, manicure and pedicure kits, dryers etc – these tools cannot be single-use and so you can expect them to sterilised after every service.

7. Biodegradable disposables will be in

Those cutting capes that tend to get reused, the towels, bedsheets and robes that would typically be laundered and simply put back into service – all of that will stop and they will all be replaced by biodegradable disposables.

8. Revised processes for skin, hair and make-up services to reduce touch

Dr Sneha Prabhudabholkar, the National Creative Director – Skin Care at Lakme Salon, has reviewed and enhanced the service protocols – across basic services such as threading, waxing, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair services to reduce the chances of transmission.

The new protocols reduce direct person-to-person contact, eliminate sharing of products and consumables, protect the customer and expert with sanitization protocols built into the service steps and adopt use of protective gear and disposables to make the service experience extremely safe and comfortable. These will continuously improve this as more scientific knowledge is available.

9. You won’t get physical bills

Don’t expect a physical receipt at the end of your transaction. Chains such as Lakme Salon will simply send you an e-bill and encourage digital payments over cash.

10. Contactless home delivery for post-care products

According to Pushkaraj Shenai, Lakme Salon’s CEO, to ensure safety of their team and their customers, the chain will encourage contactless home delivery for post-care products. Which means lesser human contact and fewer the chances of you transmitting the virus.
