Martin Paterson may return for Burnley at the weekend

Burnley manager Eddie Howe revealed Martin Paterson was left out of the squad for Tuesday night's 3-2 loss at Middlesbrough as a precaution.

Paterson suffered an injury-ravaged campaign last season due to serious thigh and hamstring problems but returned to open the scoring in the opening day win over rivals Bolton at the weekend.

Sam Vokes replaced the Northern Ireland international to feature alongside Charlie Austin at the Riverside Stadium and, although he hopes to call on Paterson for Saturday's trip to Huddersfield, Howe has the player's longer-term prospects in mind.

"We want Pato fit long term and he was feeling a bit tight after Bolton," said the Clarets boss.

"We certainly don't want to take any risks at this stage of the season.

"It did hurt us in terms of being down to two strikers, which isn't ideal. It gave us a problem in terms of bringing someone off the bench.

"But that's where we are at the moment, we're quite thin on the ground and we need to get people back. Hopefully Pato will come back into the fold for Saturday."
