Former Chesterfield chairman Barrie Hubbard is to become the club's life president.

The move, which also sees the Duke of Devonshire become the club's first-ever club patron, will take effect later this month and is in recognition of Hubbard's achievements during 29 years as a director and chairman at Chesterfield.

"The board of directors wanted to reward Barrie for his remarkable achievement in serving the club for so many years," said Dave Allen, who recently replaced Hubbard as chairman.

Hubbard added: "I am absolutely delighted to be able to accept this wonderful honour from the club I have supported from being a small boy. I am particularly pleased that the Duke of Devonshire is to be our new club patron as it maintains the football club's long-standing connection with Chatsworth and the Cavendish family.

"As life president I pledge to give the position my utmost respect and attention and wish everyone at the football club all the very best in their endeavours to get the club into the Championship as soon as possible."

During Hubbard's time at the club Chesterfield have had three promotions, four relegations, two Wembley play-off finals, an historic FA Cup semi-final, and won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Wembley.

His lasting legacy is to have masterminded the club's relocation to the new £13million, 10,300 all-seater B2net Stadium in 2010 after 139 years at Saltergate.
