Huddersfield Giants eye up NRL club's top try-scorer after impressive rookie season
Huddersfield Giants have tabled an offer for South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Jacob Gagai. Reports from Australia have emerged linking the Super League club with the 28-year-old after he was not offered a contract by the Bunnies for 2025.
Gagai, the brother of Queensland star Dane, was Souths' top try-scorer in 2024, scoring nine tries in what was his rookie year as an NRL player, emerging as something of a late bloomer. He scored nine tries in 17 appearances for the Rabbitohs but that wasn't enough to secure him a deal for next year.
But that has seen Huddersfield come calling and they are now thought to be in contention to secure his services. The Giants are on the lookout for outside backs to enhance their squad and with quota spots available, Gagai has emerged on their radar, fresh off the back of Tom Burgess' arrival from the same NRL club.
Gagai's agent, Gavin Orr, told Wide World of Sports that an opportunity with an unnamed Super League club had arisen.
"Jacob was a late bloomer and had a great season," his manager Gavin Orr told Wide World of Sports. "In the end, his age (Gagai turns 29 in December) probably counted against him.
"Souths would have liked to keep him but had other priorities. But an opportunity has come up in Super League and it looks like he will be taking it."
Huddersfield were heavily linked with a move for Ricky Leutele that never materialised but they are in a position to recruit. They have so far signed Burgess, Zac Woolford, Liam Sutcliffe and George King ahead of the 2025 campaign.
