Sometimes, all the pain of following a team through thick and thin is worth it. Just ask the 165 Huddersfield Town supporters who walked the 26 miles to Burnley for charity.

That group, which included chairman Dean Hoyle, set off from the club training ground at 3am to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Alzheimer’s Society, and to pay tribute to their England World Cup-winning full-back Ray Wilson, who died in May.

If they hoped their efforts would be rewarded at Turf Moor, they were partially satisfied. Christopher Schindler’s header provided only their fourth goal of the season, and a third point.

Schindler proved a brave presence for the visitors, left bloodied with a head wound after an aerial clash with Chris Wood that left the Huddersfield defender on the ground for several minutes.

He recovered to see out a game that the visitors will feel they should have won, but 19 efforts on goal produced only two on target.

Burnley, by contrast, were rather more ruthless; it was just the rest of their performance that was ragged. They somehow led at half-time; Sam Vokes jumped above Schindler from a standing start to head in Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s on the quarter-hour.

By then, Laurent Depoitre had already been unable to take a golden chance; Ben Mee’s loose pass allowed Aaron Mooy to roll a square pass to set him up, but James Tarkowski got across to block.

Further chances came and went. Alex Pritchard fed a lovely return pass to Rajiv van La Parra, who steered well wide from a tight angle.

Depoitre was then thwarted again by Tarkowski, who got a slight deflection on Alex Pritchard’s cross and took it slightly behind the Belgian forward, who misdirected his volley wide.

The striker’s woes continued after half-time; he was later booked for a clear dive as he challenged Tarkowski for a loose ball after Joe Hart, the home goalkeeper, had beaten out Mooy’s 25-yard drive. Having been shown a yellow card, the striker was substituted almost immediately. If he was frustrated, though, Schindler ensured that Huddersfield were not denied.
