Huddersfield vs Nottingham Forest - LIVE!

Levi Colwill’s own goal sent Nottingham Forest into the Premier League for the first time in 23 years after a 1-0 Championship play-off final win over Huddersfield at Wembley.

Luckless centre-back Colwill put through his own net after James Garner’s teasing cross, that Jack Colback ducked under and Ryan Yates failed to reach.

Chelsea’s 19-year-old loanee Colwill has impressed hugely at Huddersfield but it was a painful afternoon for him, while Garner, on loan from Manchester United, had a match to remember.

Huddersfield were perhaps unfortunate not to be awarded at least one penalty, as Harry Toffolo was booked for diving in the box and Lewis O’Brien had his appeals waved away. On both occasions, VAR to not come to the Terriers’ rescue.

Forest were bottom of the table and winless when Steve Cooper took charge in September - now they have won football’s most lucrative match and are headed to the top tier.

Nottingham Forest ended their 23-year absence from the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Levi Colwill’s own goal in the first-half put Forest in front and they held firm after the break to join Fulham and Bournemouth in securing promotion to the top-flight.

Forest were bottom of the table when Steve Cooper took charge in September but stormed up the table to book their place in the play-offs. A penalty shootout-win over Sheffield United got them to Wembley, setting the stage to get the job done in a tight encounter against Huddersfield.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST ARE BACK IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

It’s been 23 years away from the top-flight but Forest are back. Incredible turnaround from Steve Cooper since he joined back in September, capped at Wembley this afternoon.

It was tight but Forest get the job done!

90+3 mins: CLOSE!

O’Brien whips a cross to the back post, Rhodes can’t get there. Had to anticipate it and throw himself at the ball.

As it is, just a goal-kick.

18:18 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added on!

Still plenty of time for Huddersfield.

18:17 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Samba coming off for Forest in his own sweet time, limping across the pitch rather than going off behind his goal.

Horvath on for Forest. He’ll be hoping to have nothing to do!

18:15 , Matt Verri

87 mins: So, so, so, so poor from Pipa.

He picks the ball up 40 yards out, every Huddersfield player ahead of him but decides to go for goal himself. Just about stays in the stadium. Samba can kill more seconds.

18:13 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Samba down receiving treatment. Easy to be cynical at this stage about how serious injuries are...

He’s struggling though even after the restart, not moving well at all.

18:11 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Huddersfield again want a penalty, O’Brien goes down this time. Mainly the fans appealing for that one.

Lowe got back and tried to get his body in the way - bit of a tangle of the legs too. VAR not interested though.

Forest fortunate?

18:09 , Matt Verri

18:08 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Huddersfield struggling to get anything going despite their possession. Just need to create one big chance in the remaining ten minutes.

Holmes seeing plenty of the ball since coming on, causing problems on the left.

18:05 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Long ball lumped forward by Forest, Surridge challenges Nicholls for it and the goalkeeper wins a free-kick.

Surridge has stayed down, was a heavy collision. Safe to say Huddersfield fans aren’t feeling too sympathetic.

18:03 , Matt Verri

74 mins: VAR agrees. Forest survive.

Toffolo stuck his leg out and then almost pulled it out of the way as he fell over. Not great technique.

18:01 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Penalty? NO. Free-kick Forest for a dive from Toffolo!

Wow. Holmes cuts it back, Toffolo knocks it past Colback in the box and throws himself to the ground. Referee not having it.

VAR will check though...

17:58 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Best moment for Forest for a long time. Johnson drags a shot across the face of goal, wide of the post and Surridge can’t quite catch up with it to have a tap-in.

17:56 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Forest struggling to get out, their front players aren’t holding the ball up at all.

Huddersfield not able to do a lot with possession at the moment though, no big chances to speak of.

17:53 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Huddersfield seeing all of the ball now, Forest just sitting back in their shape.

Cooper makes his first change of the afternoon - Surridge on for Davis.

17:50 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Huddersfield a bit too keen to look for the early cross to Ward, it’s not working. Cook winning everything in the box.

Thomas yet to get involved much since his switch out to the right wing.

17:47 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Clumsy challenge from Russell, who is on for Huddersfield. Forest more than happy to take any cheap free-kick they can win.

Almost an hour gone at Wembley - Forest 30 minutes away from a top-flight return.

17:44 , Matt Verri

56 mins: CHANCE!

Huddersfield’s best moments have come from set-piece and they could well have equaliser. Corner whipped into the nar post, Hogg makes a mess of the header and it’s over the bar.

17:43 , Matt Verri

55 mins: It’s been a long time coming but the first yellow card of the final has arrived. Zinckernagel with another foul on O’Brien and Jon Moss has seen enough. Forest man into the book.

Swung into the box, Sarr attacks it but can’t quite get his body in front of McKenna.

17:41 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Brilliant from Davis, just skips away from his man and Forest are away. The striker plays a low cross into the box, Sarr clears it away.

Forest stay on the attack though, Spence drives to the byline and wins a corner for his side.

17:38 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Thomas has moved over to the right wing for Huddersfield, up against Colback.

Terriers looking long to set him away quickly at every opportunity.

17:35 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Pipa with a decent cross into the box, Samba off his line and punches it away well. Comes back in, easy catch for the Forest goalkeeper.

Already more intent from Huddersfield.

Back underway!

17:33 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running again at Wembley for the second-half!

17:27 , Matt Verri

More possession, more shots, more shots on target, more goals.

All the statistics from the opening 45 minutes are in Forest’s favour - Huddersfield have got to show more ambition after the break.

Goal just before the break

17:23 , Matt Verri

Big early chance for Yates

17:20 , Matt Verri

HT: Huddersfield 0-1 Nottingham Forest

17:17 , Matt Verri

Forest lead at half-time in the play-off final.

They’ve dominated possession and had the better chances. Goal came in slightly fortunate circumstances, but they won’t care one bit.

17:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: One minuted added on.

Forest full of confidence now, Huddersfield will be happy to just get to the break now.

GOAL! Huddersfield 0-1 Nottingham Forest | Levi Colwill 43'

17:14 , Matt Verri

FOREST TAKE THE LEAD AT WEMBLEY!

Garner has space 30 yards out, whips an effort into the box and Colwill’s attempted clearance flies into the top corner.

Deserved for Forest.

17:09 , Matt Verri

39 mins: No Championship side has scored more goals from corners then Huddersfield this season.

Nearly! Well-worked, rolled out to Ward 12-yards out but his shot is blocked. Bodies flew in front of him. Another corner.

Just swung in this time and Forest eventually get it clear.

17:08 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Back three of Forest are seeing so much of the ball but it’s really safe, just passing it between each other under no pressure. Huddersfield happy to see that all day.

Ward does brilliantly to get away from Worrall - Garner does even better to fly into the challenge. Corner Huddersfield.

17:05 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Thomas skips away from Worrall, he’s been Huddersfield’s best player by a distance.

Doesn’t go for the cut-back, just hammers it across the face of goal and Samba can punch it away. Spence finishes the job as Forest clear the danger.

17:03 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Spence gives it away cheaply and Thomas drives forward, working it into space with a nutmeg,

Thomas tries to drill the pass through to Ward, far too much on it though and Samba can claim.

17:00 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Loose pass from Huddersfield, Spence nips in ahead of Toffolo and Forest are away down the right.

He swings the cross in, headed away though. Comes back out to McKenna who goes for goal from a mile out and his shot barely reaches the penalty box.

16:57 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Challenges starting to fly in. Colback clatters into O’Brien who looks a bit winded after that - back up on his feet now though.

Not sure it’ll be too much longer before a yellow card appears for the first time.

16:55 , Matt Verri

24 mins: If you were feeling generous, you could say it’s been an intriguing tactical battle so far. ‘Nothing really happening’ would be another way of putting it.

Zinckernagel with a late challenge and that could well have been a yellow card. Just a free-kick though.

16:52 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Long spell of possesion for Forest and it’s eventually played through to Yates.

Has Johnson free to his right but opts to go for goal from distance, well over the bar.

16:49 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Huddersfield not seeing much of the ball at all, happy to just sit off and let Forest have it.

Spence looks really bright when it’s worked out to the right wing - Forest will be keen to do that as often as possible.

16:46 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Forest starting to dominate things at Wembley. Spence and Johnson combine nicely and the wing-back wins a corner for his side.

Swung in towards the back post, keeper comes and doesn’t get there but fortunately for Nicholls nor does anyone in a Forest shirt.

16:43 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Zinckernagel with a lovely touch to knock the ball past Sarr and he’s brought down. Could well have been a yellow card that.

Great cross into the box, Yates completely free but he flicks the header just wide. HAD to score.

16:40 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Yates looks to hook a cross into the box... he hooks it straight out of play.

Not a huge amount of quality from either side yet, neither have really settled yet. Plenty of intensity though.

16:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Better from Forest as Garner clips a cross into the box, Worrall has made the run all the way forward. Defender drags back a Huddersfield shirt though and that’s a foul.

Stop-start so far at Wembley.

16:34 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Another free-kick in a very central position a long way out, up go the Huddersfield defenders again. Thomas can’t make anything of it and Samba is off his line to gather.

All Huddersfield in the opening minutes.

16:32 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Thomas pounces on a loose ball and drives forward into space for Huddersfield. Chops inside and after a brief advantage, it’s pulled back for a free-kick.

It’s Thomas to take and he clips it over everyone. Out for a goal-kick.

KICK-OFF!

One of Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest will be in the Premier League next season, it’s time to find out who.

It’s very nearly time.

Players out onto the pitch at Wembley - here we go!

Wonderful atmosphere as you’d expect, on a massive afternoon for both clubs.

Fulham and Bournemouth have already secured promotion - who will join them?

16:19 , Matt Verri

Just over ten minutes to go until kick-off!

This is Forest’s first play-off final, while Huddersfield were here five years ago and got the job done on penalties.

Will that make any difference this afternoon? No, probably not.

Cooper: Players need to stick to what we know

16:10 , Matt Verri

Steve Cooper is confident his Forest side just need to keep faith in what has got them all the way to the play-off final.

“If there was one way of playing well and winning at Wembley, we’d all be doing it. But unfortunately nobody has found that way yet,” Cooper said.

“What I do know is, we are the club and the team that we are. We are very proud of it and we believe in what we’re doing, so let’s take it to Wembley and try to do our thing.

“We are at this final, in this magnificent stadium, in this high-pressured game because we have done things a certain way. We have to continue as much as we can with that, while understanding the context of the game.

“But it’s really important for the players to realise we are in this position because of doing what we’ve done, and that’s committing to a way of playing and a way of working. Let’s try to be the best version of that possible, because that will give us the best chance of winning.”

Warm-ups underway!

How they got here...

15:56 , Matt Verri

A reminder of what happened in the play-off semi-finals.

Jordan Rhodes scored an 82nd-minute winner for Huddersfield in their second leg against Luton, to send the Terriers through 2-1 on aggregate.

Nottingham Forest needed penalties to get past Sheffield United, with Brice Samba the hero in the shoot-out as he saved three spot-kicks.

Big match, big montage.

It’s been 23 years out of the Premier League for Nottingham Forest. Three times they’ve made it into the play-offs since then, but never to the final until this year.

This is their huge chance.

15:40 , Matt Verri

Sarr and Thomas both return for Huddersfield, with Thomas starting after missing the last six matches with a knee injury. Pearson also makes his return from injury and is named among the substitutes.

Just the one change for Forest this afternoon - Davis comes in to replace Surridge, who has to settle for a place on the bench at Wembley.

15:35 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Samba, Spence, Worrall, Colback, Davies, Zinckernagel, Johnson, Yates, McKenna, Cook, Garner

Team news coming in five minutes!

All will be revealed at Wembley very soon...

Atmosphere building!

Corberan: Players used to pressure

15:10 , Matt Verri

Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan insists there is no need for him to approach this afternoon’s game any differently to usual, or to help his players avoid any pre-match nerves.

“It will be important who can handle the pressure. You need to be able to relax to perform well,” Corberan said.

“It’s something we always try to manage with the players between self-confidence and self-demand.

“I won’t manage the situation in a different way. During all the year the team has been going to the pitch knowing it is a competitive game and trying to to win.

“The consequences of Sunday’s game are bigger but to get here, you have played many games that you have needed to win.

“If now I have to teach the players how to manage the pressure, I am late. So for me it is a habit the players already need to have.”

Lovely day for it!

Prediction

14:58 , Jonathan Gorrie

It looks set to be an incredibly tight and nervy affair at Wembley.

Cooper has taken Forest on an incredible journey this season, both in the league and the FA Cup, and his side have made it to Wembley in memorable fashion.

But against a Huddersfield side now unbeaten in their last nine matches, they might just fall short on the biggest stage.

Huddersfield to win, 1-0.

Nottingham Forest team news: Lewis Grabban injured

14:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

For Forest, On-loan Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis had cameo appearances off the bench in the semi-final tie as he made his return from a hamstring injury - he’ll be hoping to force his way into the starting XI.

Forest will definitely be without Lewis Grabban (hamstring) and defender Max Lowe (groin).

Huddersfield team news: Turton facing race against time

14:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ollie Turton was forced off at half-time in the first leg against Luton, with Pipa replacing him and then starting in the reverse fixture at wing-back. It remains to be seen whether Turton recovers in time to play at Wembley.

Jordan Rhodes had to settle for substitute appearances in both legs, but his goal that fired Huddersfield into the final may be enough to earn a start.
