American investment in English football is being tipped to continue, as Derby County look for investment.

Rams owner David Clowes is open to selling up to 80 percent of his shares in the club as he looks to help take Derby to the next level in their long-term quest to return to the Premier League. Talks have already taken place with non-domestic investors, but no deal was imminent.

Speaking broadly about American investment in English football to the BBC, football investment expert Adam Sommerfeld made the bold prediction that all of the clubs in the Premier League and EFL could be owned by American investors in the next five to 10 years.

A number of clubs, notably Wrexham and Birmingham City in the EFL, have either been taken over or received investment from America in the past few years. And Sommerfeld told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, he believes the trend will continue.

"Fourteen of the 20 Premier League teams are LLP (limited liability partnership) minority-owned (by Americans) and at least a third of the EFL are," Sommerfeld, a sports investment specialist for advisory firm Certus Capital Partners, said. "I can't see how all of them won't have American investment in the next five to 10 years.

"I know what we have in terms of our trend line and our competitors and I'm not aware of a team that hasn't had a conversation with an American investor in the past few months. Every team is talking to them."
