Hull FC assistant coach Kieron Purtill has provided an injury update on the squad ahead of their trip to the DW Stadium on Friday in Super League.

Head coach Brett Hodgson named five debutants in their Magic Weekend win over rivals Hull KR at Newcastle’s St James’ Park.

Loan signings Jack Walker, Josh Simm and Ellis Longstaff all came straight into the starting 13, the latter scoring twice. Academy graduates Charlie Severs and Matty Laidlaw also made their debuts from the bench.

Adam Swift continues to miss out due to a leg injury sustained in the 4-0 defeat away at Warrington. Ben McNamara is closing in on a return, while Purtill also provided an update on youngster Cam Scott and back-rower Manu Ma’u.

“Ben’s [McNamara] not far off,” said the assistant coach. “It’s been a long process for Ben and he’s doing everything he can to get back.

“But the injury he had, it’s one of those where you can’t rush it. He’s got stages he needs to pass before he goes to the next one.

“If he has any setbacks it holds him back another week or so. He’s progressing nicely. He’s getting frustrated himself as he wants to be involved, he’s a young kid and he started off the season really well and we’ve missed him in that position as well. I’m sure in the next couple of weeks he’ll be back.

“Cam’s [Scott] not had great news on his groin. He’ll be missing for a few weeks. It’s not as bad as they first thought, but it’s still quite a significant injury.

“Manu [Ma’u] is probably about a week or two off. He’s been out on the field and has been doing a bit of running.

“Adam Swift has been a bit of a different one. He took a bit of a knock on his leg and there were a few concerns that potentially it might have been broken.

“There’s nothing showing up on that scan but he’s got some really bad bone bruising from a previous operation and a metal plate in his leg.

“It’s just a case now of that settling down and once that settles down we can get him running again and get him back in the team.

“I don’t think they can put a timeframe on it at the moment. It’s down to the individual. It’s probably a bit different to a break or a tear, it’s just a case of it settling down.”
