Paul Lakin has revealed that Hull KR's new partnership with Port Moresby Vipers has encountered more challenges than the club had anticipated, amid reports the club has signed a young Papua New Guinean.

Reports from the country claim that Rovers have signed Junior Bini Kaeaka on a five-year contract, which will see him move to England and continue his studies in the country.

In April, Rovers outlined their new talent development pathway with the aim being to recruit some of the country's best young players.

However, those reports are premature, with Rovers insisting nothing has been signed off yet. Beyond that, the plan is for any player that does join the club to sign a two-year academy contract, rather than the five-year deal that has been reported.

As it stands, Rovers are still working through the process of securing a visa, as well as other logistics such as education.

"It's still a work in progress in that it's still very much part of our plans but it has become very frustrating," Lakin told Hull Live.

"In terms of the visa situation, which we knew wouldn't be easy, as well as the education side of it, I think it's fair to say there have been far more hurdles than we anticipated, even when knowing it would be difficult.

"A player isn't going to arrive next week. It's not a concept we're dropping in any way and once we get the first player over, we'll have cracked it. But it goes to show what unknown territory this has been and also, there have been a few obstacles we've encountered at Papua New Guinea's side."
