Hungary vs England - LIVE!

England kick-off their Nations League campaign with a trip to Hungary this afternoon.

The condensed international calendar means this is the first of four group games over the next fortnight for the Three Lions but, perhaps more importantly, that run also offers Gareth Southgate one of his last opportunities to look at the contenders for his squad for the World Cup, which is now less than six months away.

Southgate has handed debuts to West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen and Leicester full-back James Justin from the start.

The game was due to be played behind closed doors after UEFA and FIFA acted on repeated racist abuse from the stands, although there are expected be around 36,000 people inside the Puskas Arena.

Rules, however, allow an unlimited number of U14s to attend, with one adult permitted for every 10 children.

Kane quiet but Bowen lively on debut

FT: Hungary 1-0 England

18:54 , Malik Ouzia

For the first time in 60 years, Hungary beat England. It’s defeat for Gareth Southgate’s men in their Nations League opener.

18:49 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: There’ll be five minutes added...

18:48 , Malik Ouzia

89 mins: Almost a stunner!

Kane and Grealish link up on the edge of the box and the ball sits up nicely for Kane, who catches it brilliantly on the volley but sees the ball fly into the sidenetting.

18:43 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: Too cute!

James slides Kane in and from a tight angle he tries to catch the ‘keeper out with a little dink at the near post. Jack Grealish is in the middle screaming for it.

18:41 , Malik Ouzia

81 mins: What a miss!

A huge let-off for England as Kleinheisler’s strike is well-saved by Pickford but only falls for Schafer, who has an open goal eight yards out, but snatches at it and side foots over the bar.

18:38 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: Kalvin Phillips is on in place of Coady for the last ten minutes or so, so England will shuffle to a back four.

18:36 , Malik Ouzia

77 mins: That is very close indeed.

Reece James delivers a free-kick from the right and Coady’s movement is good to make space for a little glancing header but the ball drifts just wide of the far post.

18:32 , Malik Ouzia

73 mins: More like it though, from England. Now it’s Grealish leading the charge as he releases Saka down the left.

The wing-back’s cross is deflected and drops to Bellingham on the edge of the box, who hits it but sees his strike well blocked.

18:31 , Malik Ouzia

72 mins: Just about England’s best chance. Maguire pings a terrific raking ball in behind from halfway and Bowen guides it goalwards on the volley but it’s straight at the ‘keeper.

18:29 , Malik Ouzia

69 mins: With Germany and Italy the other sides in this group, this is not a fixture England can likely afford to be losing. They’ve got 20-odd minutes to find something but there’s been little spark since half-time.

Hungary have not beaten England in the last 15 attempts, since the 1962 World Cup - and now they lead 1-0...

GOAL! Hungary 1-0 England | Dominik Szoboszlai (p) 66'

18:25 , Malik Ouzia

Pickford goes the right way but he can’t keep it out!

18:23 , Malik Ouzia

64 mins: Penalty to Hungary!

This is very, very soft but Reece James’ first act is to concede a penalty. The Chelsea man cushions a high cross back towards Pickford and collides with his man as he looks to protect the ball.

It’s clumsy, but harsh.

18:21 , Malik Ouzia

62 mins: Grealish is indeed on and he’s joined by John Stones and Reece James.

Mason Mount, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the trio to make way.

18:20 , Malik Ouzia

Southgate sorting out a triple change, one of which is Grealish. It does feel like a game that needs a moment of magic from someone, and there are not many better than Grealish for that.

18:17 , Malik Ouzia

57 mins: England cannot get out at the moment. Hungary are bossing possession and then winning it back high up the pitch. A worrying spell for the visitors.

18:10 , Malik Ouzia

51 mins: There’s the thrust of Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal man drives forward down the left and bustles his way into the box before being denied by the feet of the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

18:08 , Malik Ouzia

48 mins: Sloppy from England at the start of the second half, allowing Hungary to keep the pressure on with a couple of slack passes out from the back.

KICK-OFF!

18:04 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway and with a change for England - Bukayo Saka is on in place of James Justin.

18:00 , Malik Ouzia

Obviously, Gareth Southgate has all sorts of options on his bench, though you’d imagine he’s already got a pretty clear idea of the teams he wants to select in each of the four games across this break and it’ll be a case of managing minutes.

A decent game and one that certainly doesn’t have the feel of a glorified friendly - partly because there are 35,000 here for a behind-closed-doors match. England started brightly, but Hungary came back into it and created some good openings.

HT: Hungary 0-0 England

17:50 , Malik Ouzia

After a bright start, England have struggled to create a great deal.

But for Coady’s goal-line clearance, they’d be behind at the break.

17:48 , Malik Ouzia

45 mins: Just one minute to be added...

17:46 , Malik Ouzia

43 mins: It’s all gone a bit flat in the last five minutes or so. Hungary will be more than pleased with the way this first half has gone.

17:41 , Malik Ouzia

38 mins: Harry Maguire goes off on one of those trademark charges up the left and manages to win England a corner but again Alexander-Arnold sends it way beyond everyone.

After a bright start, they’ve faded a little here as the break approaches.

17:36 , Malik Ouzia

32 mins: Oh my word!

Bowen is robbed on halfway and the ball breaks to Szalai, who instinctively turns and tries to beat Pickford on the bounce.

He does beat him, too, with the England ‘keeper scrambling to get back but the ball drifts just wide.

17:33 , Malik Ouzia

29 mins: England have looked vulnerable when Hungary have countered and switched the ball quickly.

This time it’s Zsolt Nagy who lashes across goal from the left and Pickford palms round the post.

17:30 , Malik Ouzia

28 mins: Justin is back on for now but we’ll keep an eye on him.

17:29 , Malik Ouzia

26 mins: This would be a real shame for James Justin on his debut, because the full-back is down needing treatment after pulling up a little sharply making a run in behind.

England don’t have another specialist left-back in this squad, though the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bukayo Saka are more than capable if needed.

17:26 , Malik Ouzia

23 mins: Early days, but I really like the look of this Rice-Bellingham partnership in the England midfield. So much power and athleticism, as well as quality on the ball.

Kalvin Phillips could have a real fight on his hands to keep his own partnership with Rice from last summer in tact heading to Qatar.

17:24 , Malik Ouzia

21 mins: Here’s the first yellow card of the afternoon and it’s for Schafer who cynically trips Justin as he looks to get on the end of a little Kane flick in behind. Good work from Mount in the build-up, too.

17:20 , Malik Ouzia

18 mins: That’s a better delivery. Alexander-Arnold whips a cracker of a corner to the far post and Coady is frustrated that he hasn’t done better as his header flies well over the bar.

Simon Collings is at the Puskas Arena

17:16 , Malik Ouzia

A bright start from England, who are controlling the game well. Bowen has looked particularly lively, linking up nicely with Alexander-Arnold. A promising start from the West Ham forward.

17:15 , Malik Ouzia

12 mins: Off the line!

It’s almost brilliant from the home side as Nego steers a superb first-time pass into the middle and into the path of Szoboszlai. He gets to it ahead of Pickford and steers under the ‘keeper but Coady is back to hook clear in the nick of time.

17:13 , Malik Ouzia

10 mins: Jarrod Bowen’s eyes lit up there.

His West Ham teammate Declan Rice clips one in to Kane, who flicks into the path of the debutant and he crashes left-footed on the swivel but Attila Szalai is across well to block.

17:10 , Malik Ouzia

7 mins: England’s first set-piece opportunity if a waste as Alexander-Arnold trots over to the left to take a corner but overhits it beyond everyone and out for a goal-kick.

17:07 , Malik Ouzia

4 mins: And now England’s first opening.

Bellingham wins it back brilliantly and finds Mount, who slides Kane in down the left. The skipper squares his man up and shuffles onto his right foot but doesn’t get the required curl and it flies well wide.

17:06 , Malik Ouzia

3 mins: First bit of action for the home crowd to cheer as Roland Sallai drives forward and lets fly but his effort is gathered by Pickford at the second attempt. It is very noisy for a behind-closed-doors game.

We are underway in Budapest...

Right then, the teams are on their way out at the Puskas Arena. It all feels a bit Bugsy Malone, this, with children everywhere in the stands.

This does not have the feel of a behind-closed-doors match at all. The crowd is awash with different colour t-shirts, presumably due to the kids’ schools, and they are all armed with horns and vuvuzelas. It is loud.

It’s a warm old evening in Hungary...

Good practice for Qatar?

Jordan Pickford has been speaking to C4...

16:31 , Malik Ouzia

“They’re going to be very competitive, Hungary did really well in the Euros so we can’t look past them today. We want momentum from last year and we want to take good form into the World Cup.

On the atmosphere - “It’s going to be a lot different to last time we played them.”

16:22 , Malik Ouzia

Gareth Southgate has confirmed that England start with a back-three this afternoon.

He’s also been talking about Jarrod Bowen’s involvement…

“What I’ve said to all of the players is that we try to put them in a structure and areas of the pitch where they do their best work for their clubs.

“We want him to make those out-to-in runs. It’s helpful he can play wider which means Trent can play inside more as he does for his club.”

Southgate: Settled Kane good for us

16:15 , Malik Ouzia

A year ago, Harry Kane’s future looked far from certain, with the Tottenham striker seeking to push through a move away from the club.

However, a transfer to Manchester City never materialised and after Antonio Conte led Spurs back into the Champions League, the England skipper goes into the summer without much doubt over where he’ll be playing his football the other side of it.

“He seems very happy, his football is good,” Gareth Southgate said. “[Tottenham] have qualified for the Champions League as well so when you’re a player you want to be involved in the biggest possible matches.

“I think whenever a player is settled and happy it makes a huge difference to the way they play.”

Hungary team news

15:57 , Malik Ouzia

Hungary XI: Gulácsi; Nego, Lang, Orban, At. Szalai, Z. Nagy; A. Nagy; Schafer, Szoboszlai; Sallai, Ad. Szalai.

15:50 , Malik Ouzia

The reason I’m not 100 per cent certain England will start with a back-three is that we have seen Gareth Southgate briefly experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield against Andorra last year.

I expect we’ll get a bit of clarity from the England boss when he speaks to broadcasters ahead of the game.

Bowen and Justin make debuts

15:39 , Malik Ouzia

So, Jarrod Bowen and James Justin both received their first England call-ups for this squad and Gareth Southgate wastes no time in getting the pair of them involved from the start.

It looks like it may well be a back-three for England, with Kyle Walker alongside Harry Maguire and Conor Coady but we shall see.

England team news

15:34 , Malik Ouzia

England XI: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Walker, Coady, Maguire, Justin, Rice, Bellingham, Mount, Bowen, Kane

Subs: Ramsdale, Pope, Trippier, Stones, James, Ward-Prowse, Phillips, Gallagher, Grealish, Saka, Sterling, Abraham

15:30 , Malik Ouzia

So, we’re 90 minutes away from kick-off and the start of this little run of four matches for England at the end of a very long season.

We’re expecting to see pretty much everyone in this squad given minutes by Gareth Southgate as a result and you’d have to think this will be one of the last opportunities for some players to really push their cases for a place on the plane to Qatar.

England have just two more matches after the next fortnight before the World Cup begins and Southgate will surely want to use those for fine tuning.

Head-to-head results

15:28 , Malik Ouzia

Hungary have not beaten England since the 1962 World Cup.

Hungary wins: 5

Draws: 3

England wins: 16

Standard Sport prediction

15:16 , Malik Ouzia

England’s last trip to Hungary at least provided a simple victory and, although the hosts showed their threat at the Euros, this should be another routine victory for the Three Lions.

A 3-0 win.

Hungary team news

15:09 , Malik Ouzia

Csaba Spandler, Peter Barath and 17-year-old striker Zalan Vancsa are three of the uncapped quartet in Hungary’s squad for this run of games.

England team news

15:06 , Malik Ouzia

Phil Foden will sit out the game for England after testing positive for Covid, while Manchester City colleague Raheem Sterling is also unwell. Jarrod Bowen could make his debut.

Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi are absent due to knocks while Arsenal’s Ben White withdrew from the squad due to injury.
