Carolina Hurricanes forward Erik Haula and his wife Kristen announced via Instagram on Wednesday that they have lost their unborn child.

The couple announced their pregnancy in a different post on Nov. 4.

“While it’s not what is best for everyone, it personally feels best for us to share,” Kristen Haula wrote in the caption of her post. “Sometimes there are things in life that happen that are completely out of our control. After feeling amazing my entire pregnancy, with our baby girl giving me very minimal unpleasant pregnancy symptoms... at our ultrasound on Monday our sweet baby girl had lost her strong heartbeat.”

Despite the tragedy, the couple appears to be optimistic and hopeful.

“While it may be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel on some days going forward,” Kristen continued, “and some may be harder than others to understand why this happened, the complete joy & excitement she has brought to us and those who love her will be with us forever.”

“Our baby girl gone way too soon. Mommy & Daddy will always love you and we cannot wait to hold you one day in heaven,” Erik wrote on his Instagram post about the heartbreaking news.

San Jose Sharks defenceman Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda suffered the same misfortune in March of 2018. They announced the birth of their baby girl in October of 2019 — overcoming their previous tragedy.

After moving to Carolina — following a trade from the Vegas Golden Knights last summer — Haula’s production has exploded to the tune of 11 goals and 17 points through his first 21 games as a member of the Hurricanes.
