Leeds United have seen their efforts to prise Hwang Hee-chan from Wolves fail with the Molineux men making clear their stance over the South Korea star.

The Whites are in the hunt for a new forward with just hours left in the window. Leeds have signed eight new players this summer, spending around £95m in the process. And five of those players were in the starting line-up as Leeds drew 1-1 with Everton on Tuesday night.

Programme notes from chief executive Angus Kinnear suggests Leeds would not be making any more signings this summer. Amid the clamour for a new striker, Kinnear suggested Leeds have more than enough with their current attacking options.

But those words quickly came back to bite as top scorer Rodrigo suffered a disclocated shoulder injury. He has been sent for a scan and now faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines.

And with Patrick Bamford still suffering niggling injuries after a long time on the sidelines, Leeds are suddenly looking for fresh bodies.

As a result, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch had no hesitation in naming Hwang Hee-chan as a striker he’s keen to sign. The South Korea has played under Marsch before at both Leipzig and Salzburg.

And Leeds and Wolves were back in talks over a potential deal on Wednesday, with the Whites seemingly setting a top limit on a deal.

However, it seems Leeds’ hopes of talking Wolves into a deal are already over.

The Black Country side have indicated to Leeds that they intend to keep Hwang at Molineux. That’s despite Wolves bringing in giant striker Sasa Kalajdzic as a potential replacement.

Leeds back on trail of Cody Gakpo

Wolves’ unwillingness to trade Hwang with Leeds has given the Whites something of a dilemma. They can either raise their offer higher in an effort to convince Wolves to sell.

Or they can look to pursue other options with PSV winger Cody Gakpo now emerging as their new top target.

Leeds were tracking the Netherlands winger earlier this summer as they put their summer transfer wheels in motion. The trail, however, went cold when they instead signed Luis Sinisterra from Feyenoord.

Since then, a plethora of clubs have since come back in for Gakpo, with Arsenal, Southampton, Manchester United and Everton among those linked.

However, he remains at PSV and a transfer away looks increasingly likely, especially given their failure to reach the Champions League.

To that end, the Eredivisie side are seemingly looking for a fee in the region of £38.8m (€45m) for his sale to go through.

According to The Athletic’s Leeds oracle, Phil Hay, Gakpo is very much on the agenda for Leeds as the deadline nears.

The 23-year-old scored 21 goals and added 13 assists last season, meaning he boasted a goal involvement every 1.3 matches.

While a winger by trade, he is more than capable of playing as a central striker if required.

Gakpo was also the subject of a major transfer tease from Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani on Tuesday evening.
