West Indian all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite will start the Virtual Trophy Tour of the T20 World Cup on August 19, Thursday. The launch will mark the two-month countdown to the global event, which will take place from October 17 with the qualifiers.
Brathwaite was the protagonist in the dramatic 2016 edition of the World Cup, where he smashes Ben Stokes for four sixes in the final to claim the trophy for the West Indies. For the launch of the trophy tour, Brathwaite will recite a poem, that was written by Birmingham Poet Laureate, Casey Bailey. While mentioning the same, Carlos Brathwaite stated:
“This trophy brings back memories of one of the best nights of my life and so it gives me great joy to be associated with this unique trophy tour, where fans get to take it to places it has never been.“
“Imagine taking it to the Eiffel Tower? Or the Taj Mahal? I am personally looking forward to all the exciting content fans are going to create and would encourage everyone to channel their inner creativity and get involved.“
The ICC T20 World Cup trophy tour will be driven by Nissan
A press release by the ICC confirmed that Nissan will drive the tour, which aims at providing a glimpse of the trophy virtually through a 3D augmented reality filter. The actual plan was for a globe-trotting tour but it became impractical considering the pandemic-induced state of the world.
“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy can be accessed virtually through a 3D augmented reality filter, housed on the official T20 World Cup Facebook and Instagram pages. Through this filter, fans are encouraged to get creative and take control of the tour, taking the trophy wherever they would like to.“
“This could be their backyard, local cricket club or even a popular landmark in their city. The best of the fan-generated content will be collated and celebrated weekly on the T20 World Cup’s social media channels where fans can also win signed event merchandise,” ICC said in the press release.
The qualifiers for the ICC T20 World Cup begin on October 17 in Oman. The Super 12 stage will then be played in the UAE across three primary destinations.
