ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Chahar In Contention To Be Added In India’s Squad: Reports

As per reports in the Telegraph, Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Chahar are almost guaranteed selections in India’s T20 World Cup squad scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, September 8. The management will sit on a video conference with Virat Kohli in the process of announcing the squad. The ICC has given a deadline of September 10 to all the boards to announce their respective 15-member squads However, reports in the Telegraph say that India is likely to announce an 18-member squad given the risk with the increase in COVID cases.

A BCCI official closer to developments has hinted about the inclusion of certain players in the squad. One of them was Suryakumar Yadav who made his international debut for India earlier this year. Surya since joining Mumbai Indians in the IPL have scored over 1000 runs between 2018-2020.

“Surya performed well in the limited overs series against England at home and the series in Sri Lanka. He can handle pressure, a trait that always works in his favour,” the source pointed out.

The BCCI official further said that Rahul Chahar could be the third spinner in the line-up along with Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal. Kuldeep Yadav is likely to miss out while fitness issues with Washington Sundar and Varun Chakravarty could see them not being included in the final squad.

“Kuldeep Yadav is out of the equation. Varun Chakravarthy and Washington Sundar have fitness issues… Moreover, Varun’s fielding doesn’t meet the required standards… if the side decides to pick a third spinner, it has to be Chahar” the source added.

In respect to the Indian pacers, the source said that Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Shardul Thakur are assured of their places but there’s no guarantee that Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be included.

The selection of players like Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Prithvi Shaw also hangs in the balance and depends on the requirement of the management and the captain.

In the meantime, credible media sources have confirmed in unison that India’s T20 World Cup 2021 team in all possibilities might be announced on Wednesday, September 8.
