Sri Lanka became the latest nation to announce their squad, albeit a provisional one, for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 which will get underway from October 17 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, and the final of the tournament will be played on November 14.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board has announced a 19-member probable squad as today was the last date of announcing squads for the mega ICC event. However, the SLC has confirmed that a trimmed 15-member squad will be named after the ongoing three-match T20I series against South Africa will conclude. The first match of the three-match T20I series began today at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The probable squad has Dasun Shanaka as the captain, while Dhananjaya de Silva is expected to don the vice-captain’s hat. The squad also sees the likes of Kusal Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Akila Dananjaya amongst others.

The main players in the T20 WC to look out from SL’s end would be skipper Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, etc. It has to be noted that both Hasaranga and Chameera will also play alongside RCB in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 which will act as a great practice for them to move into the high-profile tournament.

Dinesh Chandimal Returns To Sri Lanka T20 World Cup Squad

However, one of the biggest surprises was the inclusion of former Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal. . A few months back it seemed like Chandimal’s career in white-ball cricket was over when the selectors decided to ignore him for successive series against Bangladesh, England, and India.

Before this squad, SLC had named a 22-member provisional squad ahead of the India T20I series and out of those players, the names like batsman Pathum Nissanka, wicketkeeper-batsman Minod Bhanuka, and off-spinner Ramesh Mendis are missing.

Sri Lanka had recently defeated India in the T20I series 2-1 and if they do well against South Africa, it would give the SLC a good chance to choose the best players for the ICC event.
