What is the team news?

Gareth Southgate has hinted that he is ready to hand Phil Foden his England debut against Iceland with his Manchester City team-mate Kyle Walker also in contention to make his first international appearance for over a year, Matt Law reports.

England take on Iceland in the Nations League on Saturday and manager Southgate has made it clear that he feels 20-year-old midfielder Foden is ready to step straight into his side.

Southgate has issues to solve in his midfield with Jordan Henderson and Ross Barkley unavailable and not part of his squad, and Mason Mount having to make up ground over his fitness after undertaking a period of coronavirus isolation after returning from holiday.

That may well give Foden a chance to make an instant impression for his country.

England probable XI: Pickford, Walker, Gomez, Dier, Trippier, Ward-Prowse, Rice, Foden, Sterling, Kane, Sancho

Iceland's expected XI: Halldórsson, Hermannsson, Eyjólfsson, Ingason, Skúlason, Bjarnason, Friðjónsson, A. Sigurðsson, Anderson, Sigþórsson, Böðvarsson

What are they saying?

Gareth Southgate, England boss:

"One of the biggest signposts to that is the way the guys have been desperate to be here this week - not only those that are here but those that couldn't be here," Southgate said before travelling to Reykjavik and undertaking yet another Covid-19 test.

"Their enjoyment, their excitement of pulling on the shirt in training, their enjoyment and excitement in coming back together as a group.

"I think there are a lot of factors in that. You've got a lot of factors in that.

"The core have been together a little while, the younger ones have been in and around the squad, some of them have been to train with us before. They know each other pretty well through the England youth system.

Erik Hamren, Iceland boss:

"I don't know if it can be a bigger surprise, that was a really big surprise for many people in the world," the Swede said at this pre-match press conference.

"It is going to (have to) be a surprise tomorrow also because if you look realistically, England should win tomorrow.

"If you look at their results they have had in the past two or three years, the team they have - so realistically they should win.

"But in football, not every time you meet is it realistic, Iceland showed that versus England at that time in the Euros.

"A lot of smaller teams in the world have shown that to bigger teams so I am hoping it will be an unrealistic day tomorrow also."

What are the odds?

  • Iceland - 12/1

  • England - 1/4

  • Draw - 17/4
