Idiot fan climbs glass, slides around ice in OHL game (Video)

Webster’s defines “idiot” as … well, this guy at the Mississauga Steelheads vs. Guelph Storm game on Wednesday night in the Ontario Hockey League.

During the second period in Mississauga, and during a 2-man advantage power-play for visiting Guelph, a fan climbed the glass and jumped on the ice.

And then he started running.

The players pointed with their gloves and their sticks as the human embodiment of clown shoes slipped and slid down the blueline. The on-ice officials kept the players away, knowing that hockey is, after all, a game that polices itself.

The fan ran around the ice, sliding into the Mississauga net and then running down to the other end of the rink to slide into the Guelph net, no doubt wondering if this qualified him for the year-end ‘Shoot The Puck’ championship to win that 2017 Acura.

Tony Saxon of Guelph Today has the story, and pretty much the perfect lede:

At least the Guelph Storm’s 11-3 loss Wednesday night wasn’t the worst performance on the Hershey Centre ice Wednesday night.

That honour belonged to a fan that climbed over the glass during play in the second period and proceeded to run down the ice and slide into the Mississauga net, then run to the other end and slide into the Guelph net.

Players and officials initially just stood aside.

Nobody really seemed to know what to do with the young man, who spent about 45 seconds on the ice. Eventually he appeared to tire out and the referees quietly escorted him off the ice at the Zamboni entrance.

Had this been in the United States, our resident genius would have probably been tackled by ushers, hit with a Taser by a local state trooper and thrown in that secret dungeon where they keep fans who get into fights in the upper deck, scalpers of fake tickets and employees who steal concession food on the job.

But that game was in Canada, which meant the plan was “oh, geez, he’ll probably just tucker himself out eventually, eh? Best let’em be.”

If only they had the most dependable anti-fan-climbing-glass counter-measure in Ontario to combat this miscreant.

And by that of course we mean Tie Domi…

Ah, the good old days.
